The week of the day of the birth
It’s been very noisy at the RUC in the last few days. The reason for this cacophony of sound is the onset of fruit (namely lichees and mangos). These sweet suckers attract all sorts of creatures. A few months back the trees were alive with bees (and we should all love those humble little honey makers) and now its birds. Okay, no jokes about the birds and the bees.
The birds currently taking over our airspace are Rainbow Lorikeets. They usually arrive in the hundreds the week of my birthday – but this year they’ve arrived in the thousands.
It’s nice to be so popular 🙂
I tried to photograph them, but because of their colour they are virtually invisible in the trees. So I thought I’d take a short video to show you just how noisy these beautiful creatures are in the wild. I’m taking this from the front porch of the RUC so I am about four metres up. Imagine how hard this would be if I was at ground level – these trees are TALL.
It was also raining, so the squabbling birds were competing with the sound of the rain.
WARNING: NOISY
Notice how noisy they are? The trees are filled with them, but they’re so hard to see.
After I took the video, a lone lorikeet sat on a branch away from the others and let me take a shot (isn’t that always the way). I named this lone lorikeet The Introvert.
At sunset I noticed the sky had taken on a very pink hue. I took a photo but it’s not nearly as spectacular as how the sky looked in ‘real life’.
My birthday is this week so I’ll be celebrating with family and friends (and, of course, the birds).
Father-in-law and hubby are both on the mend and all news is good on the health front. A huge thank you for all your best wishes in the comments in my last post. They worked!
xxxx Have a great week! xxxxx

Oh how lovely to have such a magnificent visitation! I saw the rainbow lorikeets when we visited Cairns and one came and sat on hubby’s shoulder. They are really noisy bunch en masse, but the Introvert was so kind to pose for you. I’m happy to hear that all is well on the health front, and wish you a very happy birthday week, Dianne. Love the sunset photo. 😘

What a relief about the health issues! Hernia surgery is not pleasant, I know. Ugh poor guy. Kana is trying to bite my hands to keep me from typing (I think she’s hungry), so I played the lorikeet video for her hahaha. That entertained her.You live in a magical place, Dianne.

Thanks so much for the good wishes for hubby. He waited far too long to have the surgery so I’m really relieved that it eventually went well. He’s really good at putting things off until the last moment 😉

Happy Birthday, Dianne! This is also the week of the day of my birth; if memory serves, we’re within a day or two of each other. Sadly for me, the only thing from nature that shows up to celebrate my birth is usually temperatures in the negative and depending on where in the country I find myself, a chance of snow!

Wonderful post full of bird noises. We grow Lichee and Mangoes on our farm in Thailand and here in Florida we have several trees of each. In Thailand we have a bird called the Termic that has the color of termic. It also makes a squawking sound that isn’t unpleasant. I know you’ll enjoy the quite after they move on, but do enjoy them while they are there.

I absolutely love these birds, Dannie. They are almost too drunk to move along just yet, but I’ll be sad when they’re gone. I’ve never seen a Termic and am off to Google it now 😀

They are very colourful birds, Alta. Yesterday it wasn’t raining and I thought a new film of them in the sunshine would highlight their colours, but I had a glass of wine and couldn’t be bothered filming again (haaa, I’m so lazy sometimes) 😉

Happy Birthday, Dianne. 🙂 Those lorikeets sure are noisy critters! Beautiful birds with terrible voices. We don’t get them in such large crowds, only a couple of pairs during Autumn, when they come and feast on our camellia bushes, and they “chat” to each other. Love your sunset photo. It’s exquisite.

They decimate the fruit, unfortunately. But there is still some left on the lower branches which is great because the trees are so large we would never be able to reach the top to pick it anyway 😀 We don’t mind sharing 😉

I’m sorry I missed the event of your birthday, Dianne, but I am certain it was a wonderful day. Your video of the Lorikeets visiting reminded me of the bird house in the San Diego Zoo in California. They had one just for the Lorikeets and gave us little cups of nectar to feed them with. They are as lovely as they are noisy! 🙂
