Shopping, house approval, and a gold star (sorry, ‘star’ should read ‘spider’)

I went shopping today and I don’t know who wrote/approved the sign at Woolworths, but it certainly had me confused (and a few of the staff). So I got two avocados and they cost me nothing because the signage was wrong. Don’t you just love a freebie?

Avocado price

But the big news this week is that the RUC is now fully approved and signed off. I know I’ve been a stranger here lately, but there’s been a lot to organise. There’s still work to do on the incidentals (like painting) but the long hard road of getting the place up to scratch and officially signed off has been worth it.

Glasses of champagne all round!

Before the final inspection of the house I saw this beautiful gold spider (I wonder if it bought me luck). It’s tiny (about half the size of my little fingernail) so don’t let the close-up picture scare you. The photo doesn’t really do it justice because it looked like solid gold.

And for all those people (including family and friends) who live not far to the south of me I hope you stay safe as Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie approaches the coastline.

Sending love and strength to you xxxxx

Cyclone Debbie

CRIKEY!!!

You would have loved the gold spider – what a treat is was seeing it! And those tropical storms are awful – it’s still hovering out at sea and I’m hoping it dies out, but I think that’s just wishful thinking.

That’s a monster ~> the cyclone, not the spider.
That spider looks like pure gold.

That sign is TOO FUNNY! And yay for getting free avocados!

Glad the house passed inspection and is now “approved” but . . . I’m not sure what that means since you’ve already been living there for some time now.

Does it means that the snakes can now be given trespass notices?

    • diannegray / Mar 27 2017 6:14 am

Haaaa – yes the snakes are now banned, Nancy. It’s a bit complicated about the house but I had to give the local government body a rather large sum of money as a bond to move the RUC to the farm. Once they were satisfied that all their demands had been met and everything was legally set up according to regulation (power, water, gas, cyclone upgrade, stormwater drains, smoke detectors, waterproofing, etc) they gave their stamp of approval and I got the bond back. Because it’s such an old house there was a load to do to bring it up to standard (there’s a ton of bylaws I have to abide by here), but it’s done now – woo hoo (and I don’t have to deal with them anymore) 😀

Congrats on the RUC! Step by step and it works. Funny signs–I blame those on the failing American education system. Maybe it’s something more!

There were so many regulations and standards I had to meet with the RUC, Jacqui – I’m so glad I finally got there! 🙂
There is definitely a failing education system and another point is that people depend so much on technology – I tried to explain when I finally got to the checkout that the price was wrong and why, but the lady at the register just kept pointing to her screen and saying the price was right because the computer said so! ARGH 😀

Debbie is still hovering off the coast. It’s a monster so I hope everyone stays safe. I remember seeing the eye of a cyclone in the mid 90s when it crossed over the farm – it was amazing because the sky turned gold. Apparently Debbie’s eye will last for about three hours so I’m sure someone will get some amazing shots of it.

It’s a relief to know that almost everyone has come through safely. The damage looks terrible but everyone has survived. We went through a category 1 cyclone in Darwin in 1986 and that was bad enough. It sounded like a steam train was coming through the house. We’re expecting to get some heavy rain later in the week from Debbie’s remains.

I think people don’t realise how bad it is until they’re in it. I hate storms and it really does sound like a train is coming through the house. I don’t know how everyone lasted so long waiting for Debbie to pass! I hope the remains of Debbie are kind to you Carol. Best of luck xxx

Nice to see Australian stores struggle with pricing as ineptly as Canadian stores. I always like when the 12 pack of something is $4, but the 24 pack is $10. And people question whether they need math skills when they leave school. Every day! (Although, admittedly, Grade 6 math would probably suffice! My kids could tell a cashier their change was wrong when they were 8!) Congrats on your signoff of the RUC!

So true about the pricing, Suzan. The problems with math skills are also compounded by the dependency on computers. I couldn’t explain to the lady at the checkout what the problem was because she was allowing the automatic add-up on the till to do her thinking 😦

You’re right about the house being a long journey – wow, it seems to have taken forever and so much work. But I’m glad it’s all done now and the fact that I can do what I please without the worry of approvals is SO liberating! YAY xxx

Thanks so much for the congrats 🙂 New Zealand is separate from Australia and some of those little islands belong to Australia and others form the South Pacific. I think there’s some debate as to whether New Zealand is a continent or an island. The jury is still out on that one 😀

The kids are learning that AU is its own continent, but mums the word on where NZ falls. It doesn’t get its own continent status in the school books, and they also say AU is the only country in the continent, so… Poor NZ. I wonder if it’s just lumped with Asia. Not even S. Pacific is labeled as a continent. Awh, well.
