Resolutions after difficult Christmas
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas.
I know we all say that and it begins to sound like lip service after a while, but I truly mean it. There are people who really struggle though this season. I attended a funeral over Christmas for the father of two of my dearest friends. It certainly wasn’t easy…
But we’ve lifted our heads now and are all looking up for 2016. Life goes on and enjoying time with the people we love is a resolution worth sharing.
On a brighter note – the finches emerged from their nests (two out of three nests) around the RUC over Christmas and I managed to get photos of the little cuties.
The first photo was taken hours before this little fella was run over by a tractor! He’s one lucky little guy because he managed to survive and is now flying around like he owns the place. Hubby named him Elvis, because of his cool hairdo.
The following is a pic of all the chicks that emerged from the nest with Elvis. When I took the shot I wasn’t sure how many chicks had been in the nest, but when I zoomed in I found four – three females and a male (you can tell the difference because the males are strikingly red and the females have more grey). I’ve tried to circle them so you can see them.
The next little cutie came from another nest where there were two males and one female. We named this guy Bluey because he’s so red (hey, it’s an Aussie thing).
And here is Bluey’s brother Mango (I named him that because the mango hanging from the tree kept getting in the way of the shot). I think Mango is my favourite! He looks like something out of a cartoon.
The males are a lot braver and get out more than the females so it was very hard to get a good shot of the females. They wouldn’t stay still long enough in one place (but I’m still trying!)

I’m sorry for your friends loss, Dianne. That’s rough during the holidays.
The only red birds I ever see here are cardinals, so this is a treat. These guys and gals are specular!

It’s so cool watching them take their first flight, Jill. The second lot of chicks (with Bluey and Mango) had big play-fights and wrestled all over the ground when they finally emerged. It had been raining a lot so I think by the time they fledged they were like kids locked inside for a week and then let loose on the world! 😀

Dianne, I know I’ve said it before, but finches just get me. When I saw your pix, I had to wave my hand as if I was having a hot flash LOL. They are the cutest things ever. I’m so sorry about your friends’ father. I think that we have such expectations for the positive at Christmas that when things go wrong and in some cases horribly wrong, it feels even worse than if tragedies had happened at different times of the year.

You’re so right about these things happening at Christmas. Luanne. It’s difficult enough when we have our first Christmas without a loved-one. I found it hard going to the mall because children were singing carols and it hit me hard. I’m glad my friends weren’t with me at that time, because I was trying to put up a brave front. I read their eulogy to their father at the funeral and I was nervous at first, but was glad in the end because I said the words they wanted to say but couldn’t on the day. It was actually a beautiful funeral xxxx

That was kind of you to read what they wanted to say but could not. Someone read for my sister-in-law because she could not handle it and my cousin read my son’s because he could not be there at the funeral because of his grad school group project and exams. Hugs to you, Dianne.

You must have buckets of patience to get photos of these tiny, flitting, flashes of feathers. Do they eat the grain?

They are very fast, Sharon, but sometimes they sit still for two seconds and I snap them! 😉 They don’t eat the sugar cane, they eat seeds from the grass. It’s the big cockatoos who eat the sugar cane and can decimate a paddock in a few days.

The get really drunk on the mangoes and roll around for days! The fruit ferments in their stomach. It’s weird (and little funny) to watch! 😀

I love living in this area, Jacqui. I’m not necessarily ‘anti-population’ but I do tend to feel safer around natures creatures more than humans sometimes! At least animals are relatively predictable so you know when to stand and when to run. I lived very close to the city for about 10 years and that was certainly a weird and unpredictable ‘jungle’ 😀

You never worry about oddballs (the dangerous kind) arriving uninvited? What can you do so far away from everyone else? I’ve been looking at a massive ranch up in South Dakota, but it is acres of land–far from other inhabitants. I don’t know if I’d feel safe.

I sometimes worry about that, but having three big dogs downstairs makes me feel much more comfortable. Mostly I get tourists driving past and gawking at the house 😉 Strangely enough I was more worried about oddballs showing up when I lived in the city (which actually happened twice in as many years). And even though it’s remote here, we have a lot of neighbors who keep an eye out for each other. Go for it, Jacqui – it’s just so relaxing living away from the rat race 😉

I thought you’d love Elvis (he’s a great singer too). I screamed when he was run over by the tractor, but the little guy got up and flew away when I ran downstairs to ‘save’ him. I must have given him enough of a shock to get him back in the air 😉

I thought he was a goner. He must have been in exactly the right spot in the big groove of the tyre to survive. He’s got nine lives alright! My screaming must have shocked him back to life 😀

Sorry to hear about your friend’s father, Dianne. 2015 really did not want to go away without putting up a fight – I lost my uncle to a heart attack two days before New Year. 😦 That said… here’s hoping 2016 is better for everyone!

Loss is never easy. Sorry to hear about your sorrow — it’s amazing how some events can forever alter a holiday or a season.
Love the little birds. All that flightiness is why I’ve never been a great bird photographer. I’m way too impatient to sit still long enough to get good shots!

I have trouble with the holiday season. Can’t really put a finger on it but it’s a tough time for me. Your home is a place of beauty with all the bird life, wildlife and openness. I know living in a farming community isn’t all roses and peaceful time, but the good times make up for the heavy machinery during the harvest season.

Living in a farming community is interesting and I probably attend about 4 funerals a year because everyone is so close and we like to support each other in times of grief. It’s so different than living in the city because you really don’t know your neighbours and community as well as you do in the country. It does have it’s downside where everyone knows everyone else’s business, but that can’t be avoided 😉

It’s strange that you ask that, Maddie because I had two red finches try to build a nest at my kitchen window yesterday. They’re certainly feeling ‘right at home’ here! I just gently moved them along and suggested they build somewhere else, because that window needs to close when it rains 😀

I love watching birds. We put out all kinds of feeders for them all year long. This time of year the only red ones that have stuck around are the Cardinals. I can’t wait for spring to hear the little wrens, they’re my favorite even though they aren’t colorful.

Bird songs are a joy to listen to! A lot of times a bird will sing a beautiful song in a tree near the RUC and I have no idea what it looks like, but adore the sound 😀

Dianne and Kate, I hope you don’t mind if I butt in, but I think that what the birds eat affects the vividness of their feathers. Seed availability is limited, of course, to location, so in some areas birds will be different colors. That’s why flamingos are often bright coral – they eat shrimp, and when their diet is something else, they are duller, more gray or white.

Someone mentioned here in a comment that the colours depend on what the birds feed on in particular areas. But I love our finches, Glynis -sometimes I feel like I’m just living in a big tree house 😀

My sincere condolences for you and your friend’s family and friends as well, Cocoa. It’s such a difficult time for some people and now every Christmas will remind them of their loss. My friends are my two neighbors who are siblings. They asked me to read the eulogy at the funeral and I’m really glad I was able to do that (and keep a good handle on my emotions).

Christmas would be a really dififcult time to attend a funeral, Dianne. My sincere condolences. I just lost an uncle a few days ago, someone I thought would always be here. When it happens, you didn’t see it coming. I hope this year brings you fulfilling days of happiness and lots of peaceful, productive days in the RUC. I love the birds and their names. What wonderful photos. Still, I don’t know why I haven’t been receiving your posts. I’m going to catch up now! Happy 2016!!

Well aware that Christmas is not always joyful. I have a couple of friends with serious health issues who spent the festive season praying for a positive outcome and hoping it would not be their last. But we maintain the jolly facade. Hope 2016 is kind to you and those little chirpy fellows. (I think Elvis may have used up his quota of luck so tell him to take extra care 🙂 )

Elvis should have been re-named Houdini. Tractor tyres have very large grooves in them and I’m thinking he was just the right size to fit into one of those grooves. I screamed so much that hubby thought I was being attacked by something, but when I got to Elvis who had been flailing about on the ground he hopped to his feet and flew off. “You can’t wrap them in cotton wool” hubby said. Haaaa, thanks for the advice dear…

Dianne tough times, its never good to lose someone special and even harder at christmas. I am in love with your birds they are so beautiful, we only get to see them at the aviary here. Must be fun watching do what birds do in their own environment. I hope the New Year got better for you.

The birds certainly have an amazing little community. They squawk and squabble over branches, but when the kookaburras or eagles come along they all join forces to fight them off. It’s amazing to see! 😀

When we have to go through tough times having dear caring friends to share the grief with and lean on makes all the difference, it’s wonderful that even in your own sadness you were able to be so caring. On a happier note, the tiny birds hold their own in the character stakes. Ours -wrens- bop & chirp around the yard and are intrepid explorers. We’re so lucky to share our spaces with the wildlife 🙂

It makes a load of difference having people around who care. I was honored to read the eulogy on behalf of the children (my two friends) because they knew they couldn’t do it on the day. It gave them the opportunity to say goodbye to their father and tell him how much they loved him.
I’m sure the birds are a sign of new life and a fantastic year for all of us. I’m so glad you’re in your beautiful country home now! 😀

I’m so sorry to hear about your friends’ father, Dianne. There is nothing like observing new life to give one heart. Delightful documentation of your feathered friends! Last year we had juncos nest in the hanging basket outside our front window, and it never failed to distract us from our worries, and give us pause to wonder at the fragility, the tenacity, and the miracle of life in all its forms. A tough Christmas indeed but how grand to have the little finches to cheer you with song and fullness of life. When I was in Cairns in early December, there were sunbirds and curlews but I didn’t see finches. Perhaps they are not so common right on the coast?

I’m not sure. When we lived here in the 90s I can’t remember seeing them. We had sunbirds and curlews, but these little beauties didn’t feature at all – maybe they’re moving down from the mountains 🙂
