Back on line
I’m back on-line thanks to my darling children who chipped in and bought me a new laptop after my other one was broken. What sweethearts they are! I would also like to thank El Guapo who gave me brilliant advice on how to retrieve the information from my old hard drive without spending a fortune. He also took me step-by-step through the entire process. What an amazing and thoughtful man he is. The good news is I was able to retrieve all my photos stored on the Data side of my old hard drive.
All my stories on the OS side of the hard drive were corrupted but I have them backed-up on disk. The only back-ups I didn’t have were recent edits to my current stories. This has put me back a couple of months in my work, but I’m a true believer in everything happens for a reason and, who knows, reworking my current stories may be just what they need!
So at the moment I’m trying to fight my way through the most confusing maze of all time – Windows 8.1. Who developed this madness?
Have you seen the picture of the baby wombat who was saved after its mother was killed on the road? A ranger in Victoria, Australia (Kim Hunter) is nursing this cute little darling back to health. I’m sure this picture will put a smile on your face!

On Tuesday I had a visit from a baby kookaburra who scared the life out of me when it laughed loudly out of the blue while I was focusing on finding things on Windows 8.1. As soon as I picked up my video camera to film it laughing it stopped. Isn’t that always the way 😀
I took a video the other day of the sugar cane harvesting. The scene was ideal. I captured the hauling tractor dumping sugar cane into the bins for the train to pick up, while another tractor in the distance was collecting the cane from the harvester. The white birds are egrets who love chasing the harvester around to catch insects thrown up by the activity. The large dark birds you may see in the sky are eagles looking for rats and mice. Thanks, Jacqui. Win8.1 is a bit of a nightmare because it seems quite hard to navigate, but I’m sure once I get used to it, it’ll be okay. What used to take me a few seconds to find now takes ten minutes and searches. I even had to search for ‘how to shut down’ because the bottom left is no longer the ‘shut down’ icon. It’s now on the top right of another page (not the home page). I’m sure they do this to keep us on our toes 😉

I had never seen a wombat before this photo. Fascinating! I plan to look them up and find out more about them, along with the kookaburra. Beautiful bird. 🙂 The machinery was interesting, too. What a terrific place you live in! Good new about the new laptop. When I bought mine several months ago, I decided to choose one offering Windows 7. I’ve heard too many negative things about v8 and simply didn’t want to invest time learning a new operating system. One day I might have to bite the bullet, but in the meantime, sticking with what I know. Also, I’m worried about my software working with it. Did you have any problem loading that on the new computer?

I had no problems loading anything because Win8 takes everything – it even took docs I’d written on my Galaxy Note from a free read/write software called King (something) and transferred them to Word so i was pretty impressed with that.
The wombats are SO cute. They grow into very sturdy creatures and walk so slowly they are often killed on the roads. But they are very gentle creatures. I love the kookaburras as well, but their laugh is really loud! LOL 😀

What a relief it must be to be back online and have most of your files back. Sorry to hear about the edits. Sounds like you have a great attitude about it though. As for Windows 8, I feel for you. I’ve heard it’s a real struggle. Hope they improve on it for the next update.

Welcome back. And congrats on getting everything back. I’m in the process of backing up photos. I just let it run in the background – so far we’re at 40,000 lol (and yes, I did purge a bunch!) Windows 8/8.1 is a pain in the butt. It’s designed for people to use like a smart phone with a touch screen – great except that the majority using it don’t have one. Desktop mode is your friend. Hopefully with your new system you have a weekly backup plan that updates everything. 🙂 The wombat is cute in a strange creepy kind of way – alien-like.

It was great of the kids – an ‘early birthday present’, they’re so sweet. Guap’s help was invaluable and he was always there to help by email when I needed him, a very generous and caring guy indeed 😀

Windows 8.1 sucks Dianne. LOL I had that on my PC, but a few weeks ago it died on me. Now I’m on a laptop with windows 7 and like it much better. Except my PC was so much faster! Ugh. At least I had a backup with the PC. I saved and backed up all my stories and edits and pictures thank goodness. I also use Dropbox to save my stories. That way for sure I have them saved in a couple of places. Dropbox is easy and free and you just move your files over into it and drop it in! So glad you were able to get back online again. I’ve missed you! xx

What a night are is right. I just bought a 1 TB back up hard drive, but because daughter still has all her photos and music on my computer, it was full the moment I plugged it in. I have heard from many that windows 8.1 is …crap. 😦 that baby wombat scared the b…j..out of me lol Hmmmm, his face with that smile is, his nails are scary. Glad you managed to save most of your stuff, we rely on them so much 😦 welcome back xx

What lovely children to come to the rescue. Windows 8 is a silliness but it is possible to get used to it. I just hope they produce something better before my Windows Vista decides to die on me. The wombat is so cute, as is the kookaburra. Welcome back.

I may have to go back to Win7 if this keeps up. This morning (for the first time ever) Win 8 was telling me I couldn’t access the network even though the modem was working correctly. It took about half an hour of searching to rectify the problem 😦

I dread the day my laptop with Windows 7 dies. I bought a laptop for my wife and it has Windows 8 and it’s a mystery to me and her. She rarely uses it now because of the platform. I’ve heard 8.1 lets you use a 7 like system but it still sucks. I hope Microsoft has someone there that has a bit of sense to bring back something that is usable to average users

I’ve just returned to the States from living in Thailand on a farm for 10 years. I kind of liked being in the middle of nowhere. It’s where I did so much of my writing. But Windows 8 makes my mind tingle and not in a good way. I had the same problem with my wife’s computer but can’t remember what I did to fix it. Good luck

He certainly is a cutie-pie! I’m so glad they saved him. Wombats are very slow moving creatures so they’re often hit on roads. If I see the signs on the side of the road for them I always slow down.
Someone else here was talking about dropbox so I’m definitely looking into that. Had I not sent my latest story (The Devil Seam) to myself a month ago I wouldn’t have had any copy of it at all (which is really scary) 😦

Welcome back, Dianne! Glad to hear you were able to recover most of your hard drive; I can imagine how stressful it must have been not knowing.
I wish you luck with Windows 8. My only exposure to it was on my dad’s new laptop, which his insurance bought him after his old one got stolen. My dad’s not that computer savvy so I was trying to set it up for him. I was so confused by Windows 8, I had to call my mom (who also has it) to ask for pointers. Normally, my parents are the ones who call me for computer advice!
I initially thought that wombat was photoshopped. It’s actually smiling! (I guess I would be too if I’d been rescued like he was.) I like the kookaburra too. I hope to see some of those when I’m there (did you know I’m going to Australia in November?)

I’m sorry for all your disasters, Dianne. Yikes! Love you post though! We are having our own internet problems. I purchased a cloud drive to back up the pictures for the book I’m doing, and it ate up all my internet data for the month trying to back up my whole computer. I didn’t know how to make it stop – at first – so two days into the month, we had bad service. We are back on line today, and I can tell that service is still slow. It’s nothing, though, to losing several month’s work. You’re in my prayers! 🙂

This one did. I tried doing it when I was in a free data zone, and it was still slow! Yikes! 🙂 So are you going to have to rewrite, or have you found a way to revive it? I use Dropbox for almost everything because it works just like your hard drive, but every edit is saved. Of all the services, it’s my favorite.

OMG how adorable is the wombat!!! 😀 I just want to cover him in kisses! Glad you’re back online Dianne I know from experience how frustrating it is to lose a laptop, a story or an MS. A couple of years back my computer died and took with him my first ever attempt at a YA novel. I was devastated but in hindsight realized the story was full of holes…love the pics and video 😀

I’m glad you have some good news in all of this! I’ve heard things about Windows 8.1 (which is why I’m hanging on to Windows 7!) The guy that fixed the mess I made of our wireless router said that the next Windows version is supposed to fix the mess of Windows 8. Who knows, though.
I hope your re-edits of the stories go well. I like your attitude as you go into it… rather than dwell on what’s lost, focus on what could be gained 🙂 Oh, I just got my computer back, too (new wireless card) so I can give the kids back their crappy ‘ol Vista laptop that won’t hold a charge, hehe!

Yay for new laptops! Glad to hear you were able to restore almost everything, and pity about the edits. But like you I also believe everything happens for a reason. 🙂 As for Windows, it was confusing to me at first but you’ll get used to it quickly enough! Just make sure to download desktop apps for everything and uninstall the Windows versions because they are a hassle.

So good to see you back online! My computer is showing its age, too, and I’ll have to break down and get a new one later next month. My husband’s newish computer has Windows 8.1, and I absolutely detest it. But I’m afraid if I go with Windows 7 again, I’ll just run into problems with newer programs that are built for 8.1. Ugh!

I am afraid of Windows 8, so I still have Windows 7. I don’t like to download a lot of programs because I’m not a techy person. So, hopefully, Windows 7 will be good enough for what I need for a looooooong time!

Hey Dianne – welcome back! Bless your kids, and that wombat is the king of cute! My much beloved laptop is still doing extremely well and I will be in tears the day I have to replace it. It’s well over six years old now, which is quite old these days in computer years I think:-) Thank goodness you manged to retrieve most of your stuff, and I’m full of admiration for your philosophical acceptance of the loss of your recent edits which have put you behind…but it’s true. I’ve experienced, on a much smaller scale, the benefits of losing something and then re-writing it and finding it turns out so much better than what was there. We’ve been away but I saw [a week ago] via my phone that you were back online… and I empathize from that POV – keeping up via phone is impossible. What lovely kids you have, of course 🙂 I’m sure you will get used to Windows 8.1 platform – my laptop is a hybrid with 8.1 and 7 but I now gravitate to 8.1 even with its imperfections. After my disastrous phone photos loss I also back up online via Google+ & OneDrive, which might suit you as well.

I thought you must have been away. But it’s good to get away for a while (even though reading blogs on phones is near impossible!). I’m discovering things on Win8 every day and also doing a daily back-up 😉

Good to read your post, dianne. I recently got my husband a new laptop and had to tackle Windows 8.1 a bit to get him set up. didn’t like it. My answer to tryng to lean everything: hit Youtube for instructional vids. Good luck! L.

Ahemm and the reason we have PC’s is because they’re not Macs and Windows 8 is like having a Mac on our PC’s…
I’m coddling my Windows 7 computer for all it’s worth! Hopefully Microsoft will get the message and switch back to a more ‘Windows 7’ format next time around.

It’s been a bit since you posted this–I’m way behind on my blog reading–but if you’re still fighting with Windows 8, let me know. I made the transition from 7 to 8 a few months back, and I can tell you that if you dig into the settings a bit, you can make Windows 8 function *almost* like Windows 7. The few differences are even pleasant, at least to me. I’d be happy to help out. 🙂
