I’ve been mucking around with trailers
Oops – wrong photo. Not THAT kind of trailer
Sorry about that – I actually meant book trailers.
I was reading Margo’s post “How to Create Your Own Book Trailer” about two months ago (yes – I’m a bit slow off the mark) and I thought it looked interesting so I gave it a try.
It took me about four hours to make two trailers. Now you know I’m not the most creative tool in the shed, so don’t laugh too much when you look at these. I used the royalty free music and photos Margo mentioned in her post as well as some of my own photos that you may recognise.
Let me know what you think. Remember – I have very thick skin (except when I chase the dog who is running away with my sun glasses and I and trip and skin my knees) so feel free to make any suggestions to improve on these.
I’m figuring I’ll probably put them on Goodreads and I don’t want them to go viral on Lifebuzz as 2014 World’s Worst Book Trailers. So please don’t be shy and let me know if they’re ready for the scrap heap.
They’re not long (about 50 seconds each) for those of you in a hurry. And I’m not ever sure they will actually work…
If you don’t want to look at them (or can’t) just let me know if you’ve ever tripped over and skinned your knee.
If they don’t work I’ll just go back to the drawing board…

Ok I have watched and listening to the music in Let sleeping Gods Lie in the background again.
They are, in my humble opinion excellent, The Everything Theory – the music builds to a pivotal point as we read the story line, loved the torn brown paper as our guide. Loved 🙂

I liked both of them, but I think I liked Let Sleeping Gods lie a bit better. I can’t really pinpoint why, though! On Let Sleeping Gods Lie, at about the 36 second mark, should “shortlised” be “shortlisted”?
Great job on both of them… I think I’d have much better luck working with the trailer in your photo 🙂

I liked Let Sleeping Gods Lie better as well and I’m not sure why. I think the other one lacks some kind of excitement… hmmm, I’ll have to think about it.

Imho, I don’t think The Everything Theory lacks “excitement.” It’s quite dramatic as is. The music is perfect, and I love the way it swells in the middle. You’ve created a desire to take the challenge to look at history in a new way. I’ve watched it at least three times now.
I stopped at your site earlier to see how you bid adieu when you took a break for a while to write. I kind of followed your lead. 🙂
I did make a couple of 30-second videos with Animoto! Now that I see how much more you can do with something other than freebies, I really should give it another try. Here are the two I did previously. They are really lame compared to yours!

Oh Maddie – there so cool! I didn’t see any templates like that when I was doing mine. I’ll have to take a better look! The music is so upbeat. You should have them on your blog (when you come back from your haitus, of course). I just got a $30 per year upgrade on mine because the 30 seconds seemed to go too fast for me (and I do blab on) lol 😀

Love the music of both – watching the first one, the music is fabulous/dramatic.
I think they’re both fine as they are, love them…if I were to change anything at all it would be – in the first one I’d have the words from the first two slides on one slide ‘this boy is going to take you on a journey’; and in the second I’m not sure about the picture with the Murder slide – it could be more menacing 😉
HOWEVER I really think they’re great as they are so no rush to make any changes! I’m so impressed 🙂 x annie

Oh thank you, Annie – I was struggling with that. I agree that all the words should be on the first slide about going on the journey. I also don’t know whether or not to put his name there or just leave it as ‘this boy’. The murder page I wasn’t sure what picture to put in there and basically plucked the tree out of thin air (because the body is buried under a tree). I think I’ll have to find something a little more menacing (maybe a skeleton?)

I think ‘this boy’ is perfect…and the tree is great, just the clouds are too cheerful ha ha – darker would be good, but like I said they’re both great Dianne and if too hard to change I wouldn’t. If you hadn’t asked for feedback I wouldn’t have picked up anything, would have just loved them 🙂

I’ve never heard of book trailers, so thanks for enlightening me! I think these are great. I like the everything theory one, there are some beautiful images, and the use of rough, written notes works well considering the story (which I’ve read and LOVED! The music in both is great. I’m not sure if, for me, there’s enough in the other one to grab me. I think I need to know a little bit more, and I understand there’s probably a very fine balance between giving just enough to create excitement and anticipation and giving too much away. That said, I do want to find out more about ‘Let sleeping god’s lie’ now! Have a great week! Love and blessings, Harula xxx

It’s interesting that you like The Everything Theory trailer after reading the book and I’m hoping I’ve actually captured the essence of the story. The other one maybe does need a little more of a hint as to what happens in the story and that’s certainly given me something to think about. It’s not as long (I think it’s about 15 seconds shorter) so I can add a hook in there somewhere.

Both are great. I have The Everything Theory downloaded and waiting to be read… the trailer is a sign – it’s next. But Let Sleeping Gods Lie I have read… and the trailer made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
Somehow before I opened the post I knew where you were going with it but you didn’t disappoint with the jokey trailer pic I expected of you 😉
I never had skinned knees, as an adult anyway. But I have had a skinned nose… I won a port sculling competition. The rest is a long story 🙂

Great job on the trailers.
I loved the notes on brown paper bags in The Everything Theory. Perfect! I did feel I would be more connected to the story if “this boy” had a name.
I loved the music you chose for Let Sleeping Gods Lie and the first few images with the motorcycle and the vistas.
That said, I enjoy watching movie trailers, seeing actual scenes from the film. I don’t care much for the concept of book trailers ~ I’d prefer to read a BLURB on the back of the book or on-line rather than watching images that are loosely tied to the theme. The exception for me might be an illustrated children’s book or a photography book when a trailer could share actual images.
But don’t let my lack of enthusiasm for book trailers stop you in your tracks. Just watch where you’re walking and save those knees!

I felt a little behind the times because it seems everyone is making book trailers these days. But it was a load of fun doing it. You’re right about movie trailers and I love watching those as well.

I enjoyed both of them, but really liked Let Sleeping Dogs Lie. I think it was the bold drama of the music. You’ve given me inspiration. I’m supposed to be making promotional videos of my photography services. Clearly it’s doable LOL. I still need to see a written blurb about the story line, but these would capture my attention to go check it out further.

Animoto is free if you want to do a 30 second video. I had a go at it with the book I’m currently writing and liked it so much I bought a $30 yearly subscription to make videos up to 10 minutes long.

You can do 30 second Animoto trailers for free, that’s how I started and then realised it wasn’t as hard as I thought. You just need some pictures and music (which you can get for free from Animoto or put your own in). The hardest thing for me was choosing what words to put in (LOL) 😀

I’ll start by admitting that I’ve never seen a book trailer before. I’m not a technical person, so when the pundits tell me I need such things for my books, my eyes glaze over. As a complete newbie, I liked the trailer for Let Sleeping Gods Lie much better, because it gave a hook into the story. The trailer for The Everything Theory focused on what we don’t know and what we’ll learn–but not quite enough about he story. Readers are story people. We learn lots in stories, but because we’ve connected with the people and their quest. (Lots of new brain science on this lately, that marketing has been harping about for years.) In both cases they trailers look well produced–with appropriate music for the story they’re promoting.
Damn. No I’ll have to look into book trailers. So much to do, so little time.

If you go into Anomoto you can do a 30 second trailer for free. I did that with my latest novel (just as a test because I haven’t finished the novel yet) and that’s when I got hooked and tried it out for these two novels. I’ll probably do ones for the other novels now. If you give it a go let me know how you go 😉

They were both good. But for the Let Sleeping Gods Lie needed a more menacing tree. No skeleton though, as I think that’s a bit too much. I love the tree idea just needs one more….gothic I guess. The Everything theory was well done also. I liked the torn paper and the music was just right in tempo.

Great trailers, and somebody already mentioned the typo The first one, I thought the transitions were too sudden, too jolting. I don’t know if you did that intentionally. The transitions in the second one were much smoother. I will have to look at them again later after I’ve had my 2nd cup of coffee; I may have more suggestions once I’m awake. But good job!

The transitions in the first one have something to do with the template and I can’t change that unless I change the template – but I haven’t tested them all out yet so that gives me something solid to focus on. Many thanks again 😀

I can’t wait to get to it but only last night I commented to my husband that so far I have only read three? fiction books this year and we’re already in April 😦 am very disappointed in myself *aaargh*. My day job involves reading tons of business material and that has kept me busy but I’m hoping to get through that soon.

The only things I noticed were The Everything Theory used the same picture three times at the beginning, and the music for Gods was sort of…whimsical? Does that match the story?

Let Sleeping Gods isn’t really supposed to be whimsical (although it does have some very interesting and funny Aussie characters in it) so I’ll have to take another look at that and maybe a rethink.

Great job! I’m enthused at least to have a look at how it’s done. A couple of things that struck me
TET – (a) it suggests to me a heavy, learned read when it’s not a bit like that. (b) the 2009 award was great but it’s like a brewery over here that is still selling crappy beer on the back of a medal they won in like 1970 🙂
LSGL – same comment re the award but otherwise this is, I think, excellent and the words and images preface the story perfectly.

I found it harder to do TET and I’m not sure why – I think I have to ‘lighten up’ on it a bit. As someone said here, ‘it doesn’t tell me about the story’.
Animoto is really good and you should give it a try. They have their own pictures and music, but I downloaded mine (and used some of my own). You can make 30 second videos for free, which is what I did for the novel I’m currently writing. But because I haven’t finished it yet I didn’t put the video here (I have to find out what happens in the end first) LOL 😀

I like The Everything Theory best; it’s more dramatic, and I really like the muscial background. The layout, letters and notes are perfect. I think it’s cool and intriguing. Did you do that all by yourself? If so, I’m so impressed. But they’re both well done.

I did them both by myself, Joy, which was a bit of a shock for me because I’ve never tried anything like this before! I just went into Animoto and put some pictures in and then music – it’s all pretty simple (they provide pictures if you don’t have any and you can download the music for free or use theirs).

Based on the music and the snippets, it looks like TET is an adventure thriller. The music is building as it does in those Alfred Hitchcock movies when you know something is going to happen and you’re on the edge of your seat; and you still jump and squeal when it does happen.
The trailer for Sleeping Gods has music that is more flowing and upbeat, so it was a surprise to me to see the word ‘murder’ on one of the snippets. I like how the snippets transition into each other; it’s not as jerky as TET.
I hope this comment makes sense – I’m still having some issues with finding the right words.

I know what you mean. Someone used the word ‘whimsical’ for the music to Sleeping Gods, so I may have to add more of a dramatic tone. After reading your comment this morning I went into Animoto and searched for a way to stop the ‘jerkiness’ of the transition. I think I many have found it so when I update them I’ll change it.

I was really happy with my first attempt and am glad so many have come in to tell me what they think. All the comments have been such a great help and when I redo them I’m taking everything here on board for the changes.
I’ve never really seen trailers for books up until about six months ago when it became the in thing. Most publishing houses now do them and it’s probably just a way to catch the attention of readers. I thought I’d give it a try and was surprised how easy it was (hence, me putting them out there for others to let me know what they think, because I often kid myself into thinking things are good when they’re not! LOL).

Well, aren’t you brave! 🙂 I haven’t bothered because I don’t look at book trailers. I read the blurb, look at the cover, *look inside* at Amazon to make sure the author can write and used an editor, and make my decision. But I know people who do, and any way you can reach readers is a plus. 🙂

I’ve noticed the ‘book trailer’ becoming more prominent in the last year or so, Theo, so I thought I’d give it a shot. Was unsure at first because being ‘visually artistic’ is not really one of my strong points 😉 But I ended up enjoying this – I might just make a few more for my other books 😉

Those are great! I love the sense of mystery that’s created with the photos. I’ve been wanting to read The Everything Theory for a while now, but the trailer makes me want to read it even more. It seems like my kind of a book. I’m moving it up to next on the list!

I went into Animoto, Jackie. You can make free videos there if they’re under 30 seconds. I gave it a try last week for my new novel and found it was very easy to work with (but I didn’t finish my video because I haven’t finished the novel yet and don’t know how it’s going to end) 😉
So I upgraded with Animoto to $30 per year which gives me more options and the ability to produce a video up to 10 minutes long. It’s very user friendly and they also provide music and pictures of you don’t have your own.
Let me know what you think of Animoto if you go in to have a look 😀

Both are very nicely done. The music you selected for each was particularly good. Apart from the recycling of a few images in the trailer for ‘The Everything Theory’, I can’t find any flaw. (That, in and of itself, isn’t a flaw, per se. A lot of people may not even notice it.)
All in all, I’d say they’re very impressive. Excellent work! 🙂

Dianne, those are great! I love the Let Sleeping Gods Lie music choice and it’s simplicity. Totally drawn in. And, I love the story-telling parts of The Everything Theory – so suspenseful!! Both really great and I think the idea of a book trailer is cool! I use Animoto and have the paid account – well worth it! Have fun – share more as you make more! 🙂

Dianne, these were great! I particularly like the one for The Everything Theory: all the photos gave it an epic feel, plus and the lens flare on the camera was a nice touch. 🙂
The one for Let Sleeping Gods Lie was more simplistic/less epic but I’m guessing more suited to the type of story it is. It too is well done. I think you have safely evaded Lifebuzz, and I’m impressed you made those in only four hours!

LOL – I’m no pro, these are my first attempts. I use Animoto, it’s fantastic. I made two more for Soul’s Child and The Eleventh Question yesterday 😀 I’m really happy with The Eleventh Question one, but Soul’s Child so far is a bit ho hum – I’m going to work on it again today.

Firstly, I think you’re incredibly brave to attempt this!
Secondly, I love The Everything Theory best. I liked both, I just LOVED The Everything Theory. (I haven’t read all the comments so I don’t know what everyone else is saying) I just like the whole concept anyway and the tone of the video seemed to portray that well. I thought it was fabulous! You should be so proud of yourself 🙂

When I did these I didn’t know how they would be received, but I’ve been getting some very positive feedback 😀 I’ve been working on another two for the other two novels over the last few days and am now wondering if it’s becoming an obsession! I’ve put one on Goodreads, but I’m not sure if there is a group I can run them past – I’m still searching (I don’t really understand Goodreads and should take more time having a look through there).
I put Sleeping Gods on YouTube and have had 6 views (although, I think it may have just been me who was viewing it) LOL 😀
If you ever think of doing this let me know – hopefully I’ll have a few tips when I’m finished all mine 😉

Late to the comments, sorry. Craaaazzzyyy week. Fun trailers! I liked Sleeping Gods better. The Everything Theory didn’t hook me, although when I’ve read excerpts and reviews I know I would love the book. I guess because there isn’t much of a clue in the trailer as to what the story is about? And the phrasing wasn’t original to me, so I kind of lost interest. Sleeping Gods trailer makes me want to read that book!

I knew there was something amiss with TET, but wasn’t sure what it was. I’ve done another trailer (same pics and template) with different words and it still doesn’t have the WOW factor. Because I love this story so much, I think I’m overthinking it and not making it simple enough.

Nice job, Miss Dianne! I think book trailers can be an awesome accompaniment to our work. I say “can be”, because I’ve seen some yucky ones out there. One in particular involved embarrassing acting starring knights in homemade armor sword-fighting around a backyard.
I think you have such a dynamic personality that a behind the scenes with Dianne (interview style like I did with mine) would be something you could definitely pull off. Just a thought…

I’m so glad you like the trailers. I’ve made more for the other books now and am driving my kids nuts telling them to look at them to check for typos etc. I’m pretty sure they’re over it by now 😉

Believe it or not, I’m pretty shy as well, which is why I had the cam all set up myself. I would have had some trouble even with Mr. H on the other side.
You should totally give it a shot! Maybe you can have some knights sword-fighting in the background for visual effects. : )
