I smell a rat
I’ve always been very careful not to leave any food out no matter where I live. Not only is this because I like a clean house, but I despise rats and mice. They carry nasty things like Weil’s Disease (Leptospirosis).
Some people may think they’re cute and others may be surprised to know there actually ARE creatures that I prefer dead rather than alive. My brother-in-law told me yesterday that he had found a rat in the house next door to us on the farm. This surprised me because their house is as clean and sterile as a hospital. But he thinks they’ve come out due to the weather – loads of rain and then loads of sunshine.
This morning I woke up to find something had enjoyed my avocado and banana. YUCK!
Now the traps are set and I’m tooling up to go to war with this menace.
When I looked at this photo, I remembered I should have shown you the bar I have now finished. When we got the RUC the bar was covered in blue laminate. I ripped off the laminate and sanded and polished the wood below. It was a big job because the bar is 3.5 metres (or 11.5 feet) long. I’m pretty proud of it!
*As an update to my last post – the website that was giving away my books has now shut down. I’m not sure if it was because of this post or if there were other complaints made (YAY to the power of social media!).

We have some cats but they don’t come in the house (I’m allergic to their fur, unfortunately – otherwise the’d be in the kitchen on guard duty) 😀

LOL 😀 The rats here are pretty big and aggressive – it’ a tough decision which yucky creature is worse 😉 If I had to be in a room with either a python or a rat, I’d probably choose the python…

I was horrified. I threw the lot away (even the ‘untouched’ fruit) – it’s not worth even touching anything they’ve been near or around. Yucky! 😦

They have cats next door and I’ve actually seen a few ‘bits and pieces’ of vermin in the yard – so they’re certainly doing their job 😀

Me too, Ruth. In the tropics they’re as big as cats (sometimes bigger) and they can be aggressive. A friend of mine up the road was bitten on the elbow by one when he was in bed asleep one night. What a nightmare! Yikes! I hate the things…

It was a big challenge, Joy. I sanded and varnished it about eight times. Each time it became more beautiful. It was great exercise! I don’t now why they laminated it, but I’m glad they did because it had no marks or scratches on it 😀

The bar looks absolutely gorgeous, Dianne. Yuck on the rats! Oh, I hate them too. My sister had a problem with them once. I’ll never forget the photos she had of them. They were huge suckers and could outsmart the traps. Good luck with it. I’m glad to hear that website was removed. Oh, what a relief!

I saw a program on rats one night and it was SOOOO interesting. They are extremely intelligent and very difficult to get rid of one they settle into a place. They have an entire hierarchy where the lower rats eat any food they find, if they’re still alive after a few days the rats up the scale will eat it until it goes all the way to the top. The only way you can effectively get rid of them is to feed them for about a month and then put poison in the food when you have their trust. I tried this once and it actually worked. Traps get the first few, but then the others know and avoid them – it’s kind of scary how smart they are.
The bar is a showstopper – I’ll have to get a better picture of it. It was a lot of work but well worth it 😀

We have the same problem with the fruit trees – the fruit bats come in, take a bite out of one piece of fruit and go to the next – thoughtless!

We call them doilies (funny name) – I have them everywhere. I guess it’s a habit I got from my mother and grandmother because they used to make them 😀

Ok I like mice, well I won’t go cuddle them, but I would rather them than rats, so pleased you do kill some vermin! The bench/bar is gorgeous, you should be proud, who in their right mind would cover that with bloody laminate??

I have no idea why they covered it in laminate, but I’m kind of glad they did because it had no scratches on it whatsoever (until hubby decided to ‘help’ – he’s good with the big manly things but not something that takes a finer hand) 😆
I’m sure the mice you’re talking about are a lot cuter than the monster rats we have here – they can get as big as cats and they’re pretty aggressive. This is war as far as I’m concerned 😀

I hesitate to mention I kept pet rats and they’re wonderful, bright, friendly and full of mischief. They certainly had the measure of the cat.

Rats are extremely intelligent creatures, David. There is no way you can destroy an entire colony of them (short of an atomic bomb). They have a very sophisticated hierarchy and are truly an amazing creature. Having said that – the rats we get here are hugs (cat size) and they’re aggressive. If they’re in the house at night you can be just about sure they’ll bite you while you’re in bed (it’s happened to a friend of mine). I’ve seen the pet rats people keep and they are cute, but a very distant cousin to the creatures I’m going to war with here 😉

It’s probably because you have a nice clean house such a nice selection of goodies displayed so enticingly that the rat chose to dine there. I hate the thought of it… eeeewwww. We quite often leave fruit, avocado in bowls on the bench; I never considered what a delicious temptation it would be from a rodent’s POV. I doubt the rodent visitor stopped to admire the surface it was eating off but it is very nice. You are a gun hand with a sander 😉

Because we have so much fruit on the trees here I often have a bowl on the bench. Now I’ll be keeping it in the fridge 😉
Silly rodent should have noticed my beautiful bench and not stomped all over it – he was probably looking at his reflection in the shiny surface 😀
I can out-sand the best of them at ten paces (and I have about five sanders as well, I must be a gun) 😆

Funny, I always associate rats with sewers and big cities, but I guess they must have rural cousins that prefer the country life. The bar is great – I can just see the beer glasses banging down on it, a harassed bartender trying to keep it clean. What wood is it?

I have no idea what wood it is, Roy. I’ve even had some friends who know their timber look at it and they’re not even sure. So it may not be a ‘local’ wood. My friends think it may be Golden Ash, but they’re just guessing. It’s all one piece (about 3/4 inch thick) so probably heavy as hell. There are two more of them that came with the house (covered in the blue laminate) but they were moved into the shed very early on. Once I saw what this one was like I got pretty excited about the others and want to see if they’re just as spectacular. Maybe if I take a close-up of the grain someone online might be able to identify it for me.
The country rats are they type you don’t want to mess with. They’re the inbred aggressive second cousins to those polite city rats 😀
On a side note: A friend of mine (who is a sceptic) was here the other day having coffee when she said she felt a hand squeeze her arm (reassuringly). It was really odd because she has no idea about any of the goings on here. She told me it happened and then didn’t want to talk about it anymore because it surprised her so much. When she left I asked her if she was okay and she said the caress on the arm seemed to be reassuring, but freaky. She’s the first one (that I know of besides me) this has happened to. Now I’m trying to figure out why it was her and not others who know about it and come here to see if ‘anything happens’.

The bar is gorgeous – beautiful wood, it is hard to believe that got covered up with laminate, but it’s interesting what is considered ‘in’ at different points in time. I am glad you discovered and restored that natural look! Now, the rats, omg. I just want to walk around the room with my fingers in my ears, my eyes closed and saying: la la blah blah la blah..and just pretend there are no rats. But your idea is much better – the war is on and my bets are on you! You can just tell us though, when they are caught. I don’t think we need photos.. 😀

The wood is absolutely magnificent and I’m really glad they laminated it because it kept it protected for many years (reminds me of people who leave the plastic on sofas!)
The RUC came with two more of these bars, so I’m looking forward to seeing if they end up as nice as this one (although unfortunately they may have to relegated to the ‘man cave’ due to lack of space upstairs for another bar) 😀

I’d love to have a cat here, but unfortunately their fur makes me sneeze and my eyes itch 😦 There are two cats in the main house next door and I’ve seen a few ‘bits and pieces’ of rodents lying around the back door in the mornings when I go to feed them (I’m looking after the cats at the moment while MIL and FIL are in Brissy. I always praise the cats when I see this and they puff their chests out meow very loudly as if they know I’m happy with them 😀 Too cute…

I’ve dealt with rats twice, and both times, it was traumatic. The first instance was in a chicken coop; we resorted to “natural means,” which drove them out of the coop and into the house. We immediately resorted to poison.The next time, I was living in a duplex, and the rat had found its way upstairs and chewed a hole in the bathroom wall. It was stealing the dog’s food and stashing it under a skirted chair. I used a trap for that one. Pet rats are interesting, but the uninvited ones must go away or die.

That bar is beautiful!!! As to wild rats and mice, it’s a shame to kill these critters but you can’t have them in your house. It also wouldn’t do any good to get live traps and let them go somewhere else because its open nature where you are. Too bad you can’t have a talk with them and tell them to move. It’s not cool to have them in your house, that’s for sure.

We have native rats here, Jenny and those ones I would leave alone (and I’ve never seen one come in the house). They have a white tail and they usually eat chickens in the chicken coup (they’re very big!). The introduced rats are the ones that will come in the house looking for food. My main aim is to deter them (I’d love to have a chat with one! lol) but if I can’t deter them they’ve got to go, unfortunately for them .
I’m so glad you like the bar. I was surprised it came up so well because I thought they had laminated it due to the fact that it was inferior wood – but it seems that’s not the case at all 😀

I have never tried this, but i heart peppermint extract is a natural deterrent for mice and rats. Once they smell it they would never return to the area.

That photo, ick! (the rat bite not the beautiful kitchen – great looking stove but the way). I had mice in my flat in Paris. I kept a spotless home rest assured but the building was from the 17th C (many generations of mice, haha!) and I lived above a fishmonger and a butcher….. I would lay in bed and hear the mice in the walls (shudder). Ah, student living…

They tend to make an awful noise in the roof and walls. Half the time you don’t know if it’s someone in the crawly space because you can hear them pushing things around. When we moved into our last house it came with rats and it took me about three months to get rid of them.
I’m glad you noticed the stove – it’s a beauty. It’s got five gas burners and an electric oven 😀

That is a total yuck! I’m so sorry! We had that problem in Oregon more than here. I had a rat in the garage once. I heard him gnawing on the wall when we were in bed. One day I came home from work, and there he was between two cabinets. I got a shovel and chopped his bared-teeth, claws-up-for-a-fight head off, and left him, apologizing as I did it. My husband came home, saw the blood, and asked what happened. The rat was gone. hmmmm

Good luck catching that rat with sophisticated taste buds (avocado would be my choice if I was to steal from that bowl!) and sure, I’m no rodent fan either, though some mice can be pretty cute. Makes me remember a time in Rwanda when my Mum came to visit and arrived to find a large rat looking straight at her from the floor of her bedroom! Beatha, my housemate and helper, killed it with a few swings of the broom – not a pretty site. Luckily my Mum took it all in her stride…but it wasn’t the best welcome! Dianne, I have a mortal fear of rodents. I had a mouse problem in my apartment half a year ago, and it was a very stressful time for me. If I’d woken up to that scene with the fruit, I’d probably have had a panic attack. I’m not even joking; just writing about this is getting me worked up.
Even setting traps would stress me out because I don’t even like seeing dead rodents (although to be sure, I much prefer them dead than alive), so prevention is always my preferred strategy (i.e. like you, keeping a tidy house, no food out, and also plugging up their points of entry – probably a lot easier to do in an apartment than a house). Wishing you good in exterminating your unwanted guest.

I’m hearing you, Janna. You know I absolutely love animals but rodents are my Nemesis and absolutely freak me out.
Someone pointed out in the comments that rodents hate the smell of peppermint and will not come near it or come back if it’s around. I’m going to try it. I’ve had no problems since the fruit bowl incident, but I’ll be purchasing peppermint extract today and washing the walls and floors with it! 😉

Okay, back to the topic of “unfinished business,” Dianne…rats! When my college roommate got married, her soon-to-be-husband reserved the main lodge of a rustic resort. He and his groomsmen assured her that the lodge would be spotless, waxed to a high gleam, and filled with wonderful flowers. They kept their promise but overlooked a hole in the floor behind the dining room credenza.
During the reciting of the vows in front of the wonderful fireplace, we heard something fall in the dining room. Rats were on the table and had knocked over the cake!
No rats. No, no, no.

I grew up in a rat free province, and so am a little freaked by them. So many nasty stories, and so much disease etc. I always thought they liked messy rather than clean space. I have also been told that they are very particular about things not being changed in their environment. Maybe that is why my lovely wife keeps moving our furniture about! Rat patrol!!

My brother was so traumatized when rats found their way into his condo that he had to sell it and move out, even after he had exterminators take care of the problem. I wish you the best of luck. Eugh! Before even reading, the photo gave me chills. I knew what you were going to say! OMG – I cannot stand rodents.
When I lived in Ireland, we rented an old house on several acres. Yes, of course the house was infested. The door to the attic was in the ceiling above my bed and my dad would place a plate of poisoned meat just inside of it. I’d go to sleep to the sound of furious scurrying that would slowly become encumbered dragging and the rats died off, one by one.
Not to stop them though…of course their babies would grow and I’d often pull my covers back to hop into bed, only to find dropping scattered over my sheets. Shudder.
Your hard work has definitely paid off. The bar looks fantastic and I am so happy that crook of a website is down!

This one hasn’t been back. All holes have been covered and no fruit left in the bowl. I’m still watching out for it, but it must know I mean business 😉

My sweet little Vinnie takes care of any rodent problem we may encounter, which surprises me because he’s such a shy cat. These intruders bring out the lion in him. Hope you catch the culprit sooner than later. They give me the creeps, too!

I’d love to have a cat in the house, Barb, but unfortunately I’m allergic to their fur 😦 We have two cats next door who often catch rats and mice, so this puts a big smile on my face.
This rat hasn’t been back yet (thank goodness!). Hopefully he’s found another place to play and eat 😀

I’ve had a couple of people look at the wood on the bar and it’s either birch or ash – not too sure 😉

Ugh. I hate pests. When I lived in the city almost everything open was stored in the fridge for fear of rats.

I keep a lot in the fridge here (even flour and rice in the freezer) because I I absolutely hate pests as well.
Thankfully, this little rat hasn’t come back and I really hope it stays that way 😉

We don’t have mice anymore thanks to the cat and dog, but when we first moved in there were traps everywhere. Yuck!
