Cairns Eye – Makeover

Last April when I was feverishly sanding windows and doors (and building up my flab muscles) I took a ten minute break to read the local newspaper (Cairns Post). An interesting competition caught my eye.

**Win a Makeover**

Hmmm – I needed that, so I entered and then promptly forgot about it when I got back into sanding again.

After returning in September after a week away to visit my mother I received a phone call. My entry stating why I needed a makeover had won!

I actually can’t remember what I wrote now but it went something along the lines of After all the work I’ve done on the RUC people are starting to mistake me for a tradie.

I spent a fantastic day being pampered. In the morning I went to Ipseity Beauty & Hair Studio where Kristie shaped my unruly locks and did my make-up. In the afternoon I went shopping with a fashion guru (Gerlinda) who told me I should wear a bra (dang it – I hate bras!)

Gerlinda was amazing – she would walk into a shop, pick several outfits that I wouldn’t think of wearing in a pink fit and ask me to try them on. I loved every one of them.

It’s odd how we think we know what styles and colours suit us until someone who actually knows what they’re talking about suggests otherwise. I love blue and wear it all the time.

Gerlinda’s first words to me were don’t wear blue it doesn’t suit your colouring. This statement hit me like a dead fish in the face. Don’t wear blue? Good grief – I LOVE blue, everything in my wardrobe is blue! I was even wearing a blue shirt at the time 😦

We would walk into a shop and I would veer for the first blue outfit I could see – she would head for the earthy colours.

Only wear colours you can find in a forest she would say. Greens, browns, oranges – yick! For some reason my eyes are not drawn to those colours – but they suited me!

After the outfits were chosen we went to the photographic studio for some pictures.

Work it – were the photographer’s words. I wasn’t sure how to work it.

Pull your stomach in, chest out, shoulders back – I don’t know about you, but I can’t do all those things at the same time.

Smile with your eyes – Oh dear, after a full week of bawling after seeing my mother, my eyes looked like a truck drivers gut.

But the photographer was great – he told some jokes and made me laugh and then I started to work it like the best of them.

This is a big thank you to the team at the Cairns Post (Cairns Eye) for giving me a great day!

Cairns Eye (2)Don’t you just love these colours?

Before this I would never have worn orange – go figure…

Sounds like Gerlinda also went over philosophy, not just style.

(For the record, I think you look good in the blue in the before picture too.)
(But then, I’m also partial to that color.)

I just can’t help myself, Guapo! Even now when I walk into a shop I go for the blues (my favourite song is Blue Day and my kitchen is blue! – LOL)
I see what she means, though – light blues aren’t really my colour so now I go for the darker blues and purples 😀

Thank you so much for the lovely compliment, now I’m blushing 😳

How fun! And you look amazing! I could certainly use something like that. I’ve been sporting long, straight hair forever, and I wear mostly black along with a few neutrals. Oh, they’d have a field day with me…

Glad you won. I bet it was a nice treat after the busy year you’ve had. 🙂

It gave me a new lease on life, Carrie! I had such a great day (who doesn’t love all that spoilation?) 😀

My hair was long and straight for years, but it goes frizzy in the tropical climate so I had it cut shorter (it’s too hot to use a straightner here) 😉

If ever you see a competition like this – go for it! 😀

It took a lot of courage, Carrie. But sometimes moving out of that comfort zone can be a good thing. For a start – I normally hate having my photo taken and will treat a camera like its a loaded gun. I think the photographer knew that and worked extra hard with me on it 😉

You so deserved the makeover… there was no way they could choose any entry over that. I thought you looked fine to start with but after, well, wow. I think though it’s not just about how you look but how you feel – I know I get a little bounce in my step after a haircut or wear a new outfit… hhhmmm which reminds me, both of which I really need to attend to.

I can’t remember the last time I got new clothes and had my hair done on the same day (maybe my wedding 25 years ago!) 😉

It came at exactly the right time for me. There was a lot going on and the stress was weighing me down big time. It was SO different than anything else I was doing and it gave me a day for ‘me’ which is always a good thing 😉

Hey – great idea about the book jackets. Now I just need to find a willing photographer…

The skin tone thing is really important – some colours (like light blue) really give me that ‘washed out’ look and I’d never thought of it before.

Thanks for agreeing with Guapo – more red cheeks for me 😳

You sure worked it – and look fabulous! The outfits are great. You don’t have to completely stay away from the blues. Throw a teal in there – more green blue. Or a turquoise. About 30 – ok that’s not possible lol (it is really) – years ago, I had my colours done. At that time they broke them into seasons. I was a winter, but it sounds like you’re a true Autumn. I looked them up and amazingly enough, that method of doing colours hasn’t been archived in a museum somewhere. This site shows you some of the colours an autumn can wear. http://www.thechicfashionista.com/autumn-color-analysis.html – including bright yellow which makes a lot of us look completely jaundiced! Enjoy the change. Think how totally awesome you’re going to look at all those book signings. 😀

I had a look at that page, Suzan and it’s great! I think I must be a true Autumn 😉 The teal totally works and I’ve got a few outfits that colour in my wardrobe (phew!) 😀

Having the colours done used to be very popular when I was younger (yes – 30 years ago!) but I never really thought of doing it back then and probably should have.

I was a bit nervous about you seeing this page and wondering what you would think of the photography – so glad you came over and liked it! 😀

What great fun! Congratulations. My favorite is Look 1–and I think it’s entirely because of the orange. ( A color I would never pick, either.) It makes you positively glow. And I’m all for spoiling (though spoilation doesn’t sound good.) After all your tradie efforts, a good pampering is completely in order. Now you can sit back down to writing with an entirely different perspective.

I think this experience has made a difference to my writing (and I hadn’t thought of that until this comment) because it has given me more ideas about the colour of the clothing my characters wear. It seems to add just another layer of depth to their personalities 😀

You look awesome, Dianne! Those forest colors really do suit you. I’m drawn to blues, too, because it’s a safe color. I can’t think of a shade of blue that is unflattering (well, perhaps royal blue can be troublesome). I think oranges, reds, and greens can be risky depending on the shade. However, I have a wide range of browns in my wardrobe, because I love the warmth of brown even though a lot of people find it drab.

Do you think you’ll stick to these new colors or go back to your blues? It’s hard to retrain ourselves in this regard, I think. It also means buying a whole new wardrobe. That’s either fun or annoying, depending on if you like shopping!

I had a word limit (it may have been 50) and I said that my father-in-law had suffered a stroke and I was building a house next door so hubby and I could take care of him. I was working very hard and didn’t feel like I looked like a woman anymore – so I’d say it was probably the ‘caring’ part they took notice of first and then and the fact that they could get me back to looking like a woman 😀

And mercy, if I had a makeover and they told me not to wear pink or purple, I’d be in big trouble! (I found out in high school that teal brings out the dark circles under my eyes. I just loved the Tradie to Lady line – it was exactly how I felt.

So glad I have a blue supporter – my new kitchen is blue! (although it does have some green so I’m saved) 😉

Gerlinda! I was going to text you and let you know I put this up yesterday. So lovely to see you here 😀 Thanks so much for putting this in FB.

I’ve only bought one dress – a lovely green one that looks absolutely beautiful (I’ve had a lot of very nice comments) 😉

I seriously had such a great time with you and you taught me a lot – thank you!

Work it girl! Luv this post luv your sense of humor!! And we know exactly what you mean. It’s hard for me to get Inion to dress young! Which is why I call her my “old soul”. She dresses like a ninety year old librarian. And she’s such a beautiful girl & young. So I often have to treat her like a kid I’m teaching to swim. I take her by the hand and lead her towards colorful clothes. Come on…you can do it….just one step at a time….come on let’s go deeper. hold your breath.. trust mama!! lmao~ But hopefully she’ll be swimming like a champ before long. As for you, YOU look terrific, so go with it!! Nothing better than letting yourself be spoiled. Least that’s my verdict!! Loved the post and sharing now!! 🙂

Dianne, this is great! All those outfits are so eye-catching (I love prints, and orange is one of my favourite fashion colours), your haircut is smashing, and I the headline (Tradie to Lady) is the best. What a fun reward for you after all your manual labour on the house. 🙂

And that instruction from the photog to “smile with your eyes” is so true. I’ve done photo shoots before (my old roommate is a photographer) and you can really see the difference. Another strange instruction she once gave me: “stick your chin out like you’re going to rest it on someone’s shoulder”. This really helps accentuate the shape and definition of one’s face.

What a great day that must have been, and the photos are fantastic! Maybe it’s time to let a sales person help me choose some outfits again. That did help me get out of my basic black rut a few years ago. 😉 Cutting my hair, though. Oh boy, I don’t know if I could do that!

My hair was driving me crazy at the time, JM. It was SO hot here I just needed a change. Luckily (or unluckily for me) my hair grows very fast and I’ve had it cut another three times since 😯

I’m glad you liked the photos – I think he must have taken about 100 to get one of each outfit that was nice 😉

Wow! Winning a lucky draw competition! The only thing I won from a lucky draw was a movie ticket to an overrated movie (which I promptly gave to my eager younger sister). The excitement which surges through you when your name is announced is a different kind of high altogether. What did you feel when you read your name in the paper, and found out that you won? 😀

I actually got a phone call so I didn’t have that ‘wow’ moment – but having said that I did win a writing competition where I read in the paper that I won first place and I thought for about half an hour that it was a mistake! That was an amazing experience 😀

You’re lovely ‘before’ and ‘after’ Dianne, nothing (even months of sanding and painting) diminishes your inner beauty. A free make over to feel good outside as well as inside and get a well-earned pampering is definitely deserved after all the work you’ve been doing

Thank you so much for the beautiful compliments my friend 😀

It is good to get a pampering for free. One reason why I don’t normally go to the hairdresser is the cost (yikes – it’s really that much just for a haircut??) If I’m spending it’s always on the house and one day I’ll have to get out of that habit 😉
