My froggy loves to rock
I went out to the lemon tree the other night and collected a nice bunch of lemons to add to the fish I was cooking for dinner. When I went to pick one off the bunch I found a Sweet Hitchhiker. He was having a lovely nap on the bench.
For those interested in frogs – and I know you ALL are. This is an Eastern Dwarf Tree Frog (Litoria fallax).
I carefully returned him to the lemon tree and continued cooking.
After dinner I sat at the bar to enjoy a nice glass of wine, but something odd began to happen – my music kept getting louder. I used the remote to turn it down and it got louder again. I turned it down again and it got louder again and so forth ad nauseum….
I went over to take a closer look (was it the wine or a ghost?)…
…it was neither. It was my green visitor ready to party. He had plonked himself on the Volume button.
Dave Matthews Band was his favourite.
We battled over the volume – me with the remote and him with his constant wriggling and bopping. It was like having the kids home again.
I left the window open and he was gone by morning, probably bleary eyed, tired and content from his Big Night Out at the RUC.

We used to have the giant white-lipped green tree frog here, but I haven’t seen one for some time. They became scarce when the cane toad took over (an introduced species). I’m looking forward to the day I can spot one again and get a pic of it 😀

I finished your ‘Manslaughter and Other Tears’ collection of short stories yesterday. Loved it. My favorite was the Grandmothers and Gypsies one. Talk about emotional blackmail at the end! Guess Grandma can stay as long as she wants now…

It’s funny how the stories that are people’s favourites can’t win awards. I guess it just goes to show how judges have their personal views on things that aren’t necessarily the same as us readers out there in reading land. I’m so glad you liked that story – it’s also one of my favourites! 😀

I loved the award-winning stories, too, (the butcher one was great), but there was something about that griping grandma that just stuck in my mind. You made her jump right off the page. So wonderful.

Green tree frogs are fun, though I have to catch them and put them outside, along with the geckos and anoles, which are mistakenly often called chameleons here..

I’d love to see a chameleon – they’re amazing creatures. I’m often putting frogs outside because I don’t them to dry up (you’ll know what I mean) 😉

Awww – that’s such a beautiful thing to say. It really is a lovely life, but it hasn’t always been that way so I try to live every day to the fullest 😉
I take the dogs for a walk to the creek every afternoon and they love running through the water. While I’m walking down the road I think of you and your running and how much you would love the long roads and beautiful scenery. I’ll have to get a shot of them at the creek soon and post it here 😀

I love your animal encounter stories! I also love that you have a lemon tree (how jealous am I that you live in a climate where you can grow your own citrus!) But those lemons are green: is that because they are unripe? And do you thing the froggy would still have hidden amongst them if they were yellow?

I have to pick them unripe and they’re just as nice, Janna. If I let them ripen on the trees the bugs get to them and they’re no good. I don’t spray poison (I don’t want to hurt any of the beautiful birds and butterflies and frogs) so I need to get them early 😉 I’m sure the frog wouldn’t sit on a bunch of yellow lemons because he would be too obvious to the birds. They’re clever little creatures when it comes to hiding and protecting themselves 😀

I am envious that you have a lemon tree in your yard. Fresh citrus with supper must be a nice addition. The lack of window screens would not be popular with my family. The first time that a bat or other small flying critter got in the house would be it.

It’s a perfect climate here for citrus, Allen. I just love my fruit trees 😉 I also have mango and avocado and other tropical fruit trees (very healthy living!)
I’m eventually going to screen the windows, but the doors are screened to keep the bats out (for some reason the bats won’t come in the windows). The main problem with not having screens on the windows is trying to keep out the smaller insects that like to fly around lights 😦

I would love to have a citrus greenhouse attached to my house, if only money was not a consideration. Too cool and damp here for citrus.
The last time a bat made it into the house, I thought the cats and dogs were going to destroy the place chasing it. (The squirrel incident was nearly as bad but was confined to the living room.)
By the time my father caught the tiny bat with a fishing net, the poor thing must have had a few years scared off of its life.
Here during the summer, mosquitoes are too thick to leave windows or doors without screens open. Since the new housing developments were built around us, I have noticed a distinct lack of bats.

Isn’t he a cutie, and clever too. We have a frog that seems to be living in our water pipes and when he croaks it echoes right through the house. He will have to wait for the next rain to be washed out again.

They make a HUGE noise for such little creatures so I know exactly what you’re talking about. When they get into pipes it’s near impossible to get them out. Frog are lovely as long as they don’t outstay their welcome 😉

They taste the same to me whether they’re green or yellow, Maddie 😉 If I let them ripen on the tree they are usually attacked by insects so I pick them as soon as I can. There’s still heaps left on the bench that are going yellow. I don’t spray poison on them to get rid of the insects because creatures (like the frogs) eat the poisoned insects and get sick and then the birds eat the sick creatures and on it goes… Maybe this is where the word ‘greenie’ comes from (LOL!)

LOL! Kids just LOVE frogs. When my kids were little they would chase them everywhere. They’d also collect the tadpoles and I’d find them growing in plastic containers all over the house 😉

When I was young we had a line of kids shoes called Buster Brown and when TV was first coming out there were commercials for the shoes featuring a puppet frog who was always being asked to “Pluck you magic twanger, Froggy.” and your story made me think of that little frog of yours plucking his twanger every time you adjusted your volume. No relationship but a fun memory nonetheless.

The RUC certainly isn’t finished yet, Darla. We’re doing to outside cladding at the moment (I actually don’t think it’ll ever be really ‘finished’ 😉 I can see myself doing bits and pieces for the rest of my life 😀
