A surprise visitor

When I was in the shed working on my windows on Monday I heard a weird noise under my workbench. I slowly put my head down to take a look when something jumped out and grabbed my foot.

Living on a farm is wonderful (acres of space, uninterrupted views, and being able to make as much noise as you like without the neighbours complaining) but people must think farms are so far ‘out of the way’ that they can dump their unwanted critters in the cane fields. Yes – it happens more than you think. The two grown cats that live at the farm were part of a litter dumped several years ago. Most of them were given new homes, but the last two remained to enjoy their years catching rats and living it up on the farm. The cat that lived there before these two was also a dumpee as was the cat before that and so on and so forth.

The problem with irresponsible people dumping kittens is that it’s not just an incredibly cruel thing to do, but if they survive they become feral and are a huge problem to the native wildlife.

Now that I’ve finished my ‘I-hate-people-who-dump-kittens’, rant I’ll show you what was hiding under my workbench.

Cute Kitty2

I immediately went out to see if there were any more. The litter must have been dumped sometime in the last week and this little one has found her way here. I’ve searched up and down the road and listened at the side of the cane fields every morning but haven’t found them. They either haven’t survived, or have run off to join the ‘feral’ community. Either way – it’s not a good outcome for these poor little creatures.

The good news is that my dear friends (who own Mr Fluffy and live on another farm) have fallen in love with this little darling and have taken her home to care for her 😀

Thanks so much for the name suggestions for my new puppy. I haven’t decided on one yet because there were so many good ones! It may end up being a ‘pull-a-name-from-the-hat’ trick, but I’ll let you know soon.

ooohhhhhhh I am not a kitty person – but this one…look at those baby blues and the curious face. It frustrates the hell out of me, people who are irresponsible with animals. There should be more control – somehow (I know on my soap box again). I am glad she has found a home and will be cared for. Good luck at the name from the hat – there were so many good ones to choose. 🙂 Do keep us posted. x

She is SO cute! We have enough animals at the farm so we can’t really take on anymore, but she’s found a wonderful home with really loving people 😀

Yes – please rant as much as you like about people who dump animals – it’s just a hideous thing to do. It’s not hard to just drive them to the RSPCA if they are unwanted instead of leaving them to fend for themselves 😦

now that’s a cutie. I also hate people who dump animals. Almost all of my dogs and all of my cats have been rescued. The two cats I have are brother and sister and the only ones left alive in the litter. It just makes me fighting mad when people don’t care for critters. Karma though is my revenge.

That cat is so precious and beautiful! He looks pretty scrappy actually, pretty bold. I bet he has a great personality.
People who dump cats surely have less feelings or something than other people – they’re living animals who can feel and enjoy and be scared, how do they just throw them? We have a cat living with us who was dumped out of a car which resulted in a broken leg. He’s adorable and hilarious, these ‘people’ don’t understand what they’re missing.

I’m so glad it was a cute kitty that grabbed your foot… you had my imagination going there for a minute, and that she has won many hearts and a home. Kitty’s new mum and dad are the winners and the retards who dumped her will get bad karma in buckets. She looks a little like the kitten the G.o. rescued off a demolition site.
We drove a 180 km round trip to take a kitten, who had we ignored its presence in the G.O.’s shed, would have ended up like its siblings we couldn’t catch as part of out local feral cat population, from Taylors Arm to Coffs Harbour RSPCA, so it could go to a proper home.
We wish we could have cat(s) but we just survive our lifestyle at the moment, we wouldn’t want to impose it on a nice cat.
    Nice happy story post 🙂

The feral cat problem is out of control here as well. I remember many years ago I was driving with a friend when she stopped the car at the side of the road and chased a kitten through the cane fields. At the time I thought she was nuts or a desperate cat lover, but when she got the kitten into the car she turned around and headed for the RSPCA. ‘Another one that can’t harm the wildlife’ she said. Now I totally understand where she was coming from.

So glad you enjoyed the post (and you found a home for your shed kitten as well) 😉

That’s something I don’t understand, Bulldog. It’s just as easy to pop them in a box and take them to the animal shelter. Why oh why do people insist on dumping them in the wild? I’ll never know. I’m sure you must have the same issues with feral animals as we do if it happens there a lot. Some cats and dogs in the wild here grow to enormous proportions and can also be dangerous to humans.

Dianne — I never lived on a farm, but I did live on a dead end (no outlet) street and have had the same experience with kittens. When my daughter Sarah was two years old, she brought home our first cat she named Morris. Then we got Parnelli, who was a stray and Murray another. I also found homes for countless other cats through the generosity of friends and family. I too agree that dumping kitten is cruel and inhuman. There are plenty of no-kill shelters which would take them in where they would have a chance to find a good home. After all, who can resist such a face!

    P. S. Ken came up with a great name for your darling puppy. He think she looks like Doris.

Living in a small town in Texas has been quite the “animal” experience for me, too. Farm people (and some in-town ones) feel differently about their responsibilities toward their dogs and cats and I am constantly amazed at how this disregard manifiests itself. Our dog Spike is the result of his being dumped on Worsham Street more than a year ago. The Little Women of Worsham spend a significant portion of their earnings on taking care of cats that are deposited on their doorsteps. So my first point is that it royally pisses me off and my second point is bless your friends who are taking your visitor and bless your heart for caring! Have a great weekend! Don’t work too hard…:)

I agree with you about how unethical it is to dump animals. I have a friend who lives on some acreage who has the same problem with people dumping cats. She works hard to find homes for them, but she’s also taken a lot of them in as well. I am not a cat lover but I couldn’t be so cruel as to abandon such a little things. She’s so adorable as well.

Loved this happy ending. The little darling looks like a cat we had when the kids were little. It’s name was Sunburn and she lived many many years in our shed.

I have a few friends who are cat lovers and take them, but if I get overwhelmed by too many then they go to the animal shelter. I just don’t understand why people do this, Jacqui…

Dianne you got a reaction from myself and my husband (oooohhh look at that poor kitty) he is on a mission to save every lost kitty at the dairy where he works, I had to stop him at three, but it does break your heart when you witness this kind of neglect, so glad kitty found a home, they are great company.

I know what you mean about people who dump their unwanted pets in the country. It’s not just kittens either. We’ve lived on our little farm for 41 years and I’ve lost count of the number of kittens and puppies that have been dumped on or near our road. Over the years I have adopted several. When I do that, the first thing I do is get the animal spay or neutered. The cycle has to stop and that’s the only true way it can. In my case it stops here.

So true, Donna. If people just took the time to have their animals desexed it would save a load of pain and suffering. We don’t seem to have the same problem with puppies for some reason, but I’m thinking it’s because people value their dogs more here because there are a lot of wild-pig hunters who are always looking around for hunting dogs.

Glad you found her a home! I’m the “assisted living home” to a feral cat that I have seen in the neighbor hood for the past 12 years. Luther (because every animal on the place must have a name), decided to give up his rambles and stay right here close to the food bowl and a loving hand. It took over a year for him not to run when I opened the door. He is deaf and has arthritis, but also has a sweet smile and disposition.

I had to rehouse a kitten last month – a neighbour decided to rescue them from a bloke who was going to give them to a rescue centre, ranting on about how he shouldn’t have allowed the mother (a stray he took in) to get pregnant – and then a month later decided she couldnt cope with 2 and wanted to dump one.
I wish people would think before they took on animals they can’t cope with.

So true. People think they’re cute when they’re little and then they get bored of them, forget to have them spade and then they’ve got a lot of babies on their hands (and they’re surprised). Good on you for rehousing that kitten 😀
