A surprise visitor

When I was in the shed working on my windows on Monday I heard a weird noise under my workbench. I slowly put my head down to take a look when something jumped out and grabbed my foot.

Living on a farm is wonderful (acres of space, uninterrupted views, and being able to make as much noise as you like without the neighbours complaining) but people must think farms are so far ‘out of the way’ that they can dump their unwanted critters in the cane fields. Yes – it happens more than you think. The two grown cats that live at the farm were part of a litter dumped several years ago. Most of them were given new homes, but the last two remained to enjoy their years catching rats and living it up on the farm. The cat that lived there before these two was also a dumpee as was the cat before that and so on and so forth.

The problem with irresponsible people dumping kittens is that it’s not just an incredibly cruel thing to do, but if they survive they become feral and are a huge problem to the native wildlife.

Now that I’ve finished my ‘I-hate-people-who-dump-kittens’, rant I’ll show you what was hiding under my workbench.

I immediately went out to see if there were any more. The litter must have been dumped sometime in the last week and this little one has found her way here. I’ve searched up and down the road and listened at the side of the cane fields every morning but haven’t found them. They either haven’t survived, or have run off to join the ‘feral’ community. Either way – it’s not a good outcome for these poor little creatures.

The good news is that my dear friends (who own Mr Fluffy and live on another farm) have fallen in love with this little darling and have taken her home to care for her 😀

Thanks so much for the name suggestions for my new puppy. I haven’t decided on one yet because there were so many good ones! It may end up being a ‘pull-a-name-from-the-hat’ trick, but I’ll let you know soon.
