The new roof goes on tomorrow!
I was going to post this tomorrow night with pictures of the RUC wearing it’s new roof like one of my fancy hats, but it’s raining and if this weather keeps up it may not go on until the weekend.
In the interim, I thought I’d post a few pictures I took yesterday. The RUC is looking exceptionally happy of late and I think it’s all the love and attention it’s receiving.
The view through the kitchen ‘bar’ into the loungeroom.  Those beams are temporary and the paint job starts next week. Yes – those ceilings are about 10 ft high! (I pity the poor painter)Â

The front veranda. Tomorrow it will be covered by the new roof (hopefully). I’m pretty sure the rain would have washed away those dirty footprints by now.  I love those silky oak french doors!
I now believe we have another tropical cyclone to contend with. I hope it take’s Sandra’s lead and just keeps on heading out to sea…

I love my house, too, Bulldog. It’s always so green and bright there. I can’t wait until it’s roofed and painted and the floor is done. I need to get some tips from you on how to take pictures without leaning sideways! LOL 😀

Strange that you mention that, Theo. I’m actually organising another smaller veranda at the back of the house. It’s off the kitchen and I’ve called it ‘the writer’s nook’ (I love naming things!). It’s just for me to sit and write so I’m not ogling into the distance every day 😀

Sounds terrific. I’m starting to give thought to where to put my desk in the new apartment, which is awfully tiny. In warm weather, the choice is obvious: outside. There is a cement ‘landing’ outside my door large enough for a small table and two chairs. There is no wonderful view to distract me. After I fence it in, Suki can be out there with me.

There were transient people squatting there for a few months before it became ours 😯 – so it came with a few interesting additions (including the airplane seats and the odd wheel chair that you can see in the left back corner) 😉

I’m heading out there soon, Lily. I couldn’t get to sleep last night until about 1am. I got up at 4:45 and am heading out there soon to take a look – and the skies are clear as a bell! 😀

I think I’m almost as excited about this as you are! When we bought our school it desperately needed a roof. Quite naively I thought the job would be done in a couple days but between roof and gutters they guys were there for 21 days. Same price as quoted but I certainly under guessed the amount of time the job would take.
Your Ole Place is going to be wonderful! Just seeing the “bones” I can tell.

That said… even though I understand the reason for the beams in the loungeroom photo they still make me nervous. — so much for being rational. 🙂

Those beams in the loungeroom were put there to move it. They actually cut the house in half to fit it on the truck and they moved it in two pieces, so they had to build a ‘wall’ to hold the roof up on the side without the main beam. It’s together now, so that ‘wall’ is no longer needed 😀 The place is as strong as an ox. I was told by the engineer who checked it out for the move that if there was a cat 5 cyclone, he’d be coming to the RUC for safety! 😀

the house and view are gorgeous! You sound like we do here in Florida between June and November. Always have our eyes on the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, hoping and praying the next storm stays just a small storm or heads out to sea if it turns into a monster hurricane. Keeping fingers crossed you’re neck of the woods stays safe and sound.

I’m glad you understand the issues 😉 The problem with the RUC is that it needed to be moved asap to make way for a new building. This is the worst time of year to be doing this, for exactly the reasons you’ve stated. There are also good things about moving it at this time. One being the ‘movers’ had no work on because ‘no one does this during monsoon/cyclone season’ LOL 😉 and the other good thing is that the sugar cane season hasn’t started yet, so all the mill workers and trades people are looking for work to tide them over. I think I’ve been extremely lucky with the weather so far (touch wood!) 😀

The RUC was empty for a few months before we found it, Suzan, so squatters were living there. They left a few odd things (like the airplane seats and the weird looking wheel chair in the left side of the picture). We’ve got friends who want to take the seats (we’ve already given away 4 sets of them!) so they’ll be gone by the weekend 😉
I was really surprised when they moved the house and these things were still inside!

That is incredible when you think of the scope of the move. Shows how ‘gentle’ those massive moves are – guess that’s the only way they can do it without ‘shaking the foundations’ – literally! 😀

My RUC needs a hat if the storm hits, otherwise she’ll be soaked to the skin! I’m pretty sure the RUC is happy – even one of the builders said to me the other day – “I swear I can feel this place smiling!” 😀 So sweet….

Are those airplane seats in your living room? Totally jealous of your veranda – and of the fact that you live in a climate where you’ll be able to use it all year round. Just from looking at the pictures I feel imbued by peace – and that’s without taking into consideration the chocolate pudding tree.

They certainly are some kind of airplane seats, Anna! There were squatters living there for a few months before we found the place. That’s only a portion of the seats they left there, we’ve given the others away and are waiting on the last person to pick up the rest! It wasn’t the movers job to get things out before they moved it, so they left them in there! LOL 😀
I can’t wait for the chocolate pudding tree to fruit so I can take some pics for you 😉

That is sugar cane, Oma! it’s such a beautiful thing to look out on. Once the cutting season start, little trains come down past the front to the RUC and collect the cut cane. they will make fantastic photos for you to see 😀

The weather in my neck of the woods is typical Ohio March. Which I hate. Last weekend we were teased with sunshine and 60 degree weather (Fahrenheit). Today it’s snowing. Blech.

I don’t think there one part of the construction of our old girl that is straight. We hang pictures level, and they appear crooked. Most of all I’m happy that the RUC is strong and cyclone proof.

We have some spare old (rustic and maybe a little rusty on the edges) & new (knock off) industrial type metal light shades – the sort that seem to be so trendy now in house magazines, and expensive in the second hand shops. I have a couple of the new brushed metal knock off type up in our old house which also has 10 foot ceilings and I think they look good. The older rustic real light shades are better but too big for our space. We gave a couple of the older style shades to friends who bought a restored church and they look great. You are welcome to whatever we have that you need if you can think of a way to get them from either Taylors Arm or Sydney to the RUC. I can take photos at Easter, and email them to you if you think you might be interested 🙂

But hubby has already got all the lights and shades organised (he’s a bit like that!) And he’s also got the huge long-stemmed ‘5 blade’ ceiling fans (4 of them) to go in the loungeroom, they look like 60’s ones, but they’re remote control! All our light shades and switches are sitting waiting to go in (the switches are ‘pull-string’ to keep with the original design of the house).

Weather here is warm, we are in the 80s F during the day, 50s at night. We saw the comet near the moon last night, super cool! Finally.
I work somewhat near the beach and we are already getting our foggy gloomy weather (I think because inland has heated up so much) so it looks like pea soup outside and I can’t see the building across the street. I keep expecting to hear the hounds of the baskervilles or something.

I’ve never been to Southern California, Elisa, but it’s on my bucket list when I get brave enough to fly across the ocean 😉 I wouldn’t have imagined it would get foggy, but it reminds me of the place I’ve moved away from (Canberra) where you sometimes can’t even see the front of your own car when your driving through thick fog.
I checked the RUC yesterday and it’s a hive of activity with the gutters and roofing going on. We had the painters out yesterday looking at it and it probably wont be ready for them for about three weeks – so excited 😀

I went out yesterday afternoon to check and there is a lot of activity going on, but the roof isn’t finished yet. All those doors! There are seven of them leading onto the veranda around the house – luckily they’re all in beautiful condition (only one has a pane of glass missing, but it’s easy to replace that). Thank you for being as excited as I am! 😀

The storm is actually helping at the moment, JM. It’s sucked all the clouds out to sea (where it’s just sitting there building up), they say it could come back in and hit land, but they’re not sure where yet… It’s very touch and go! But at the moment, it’s sunny here. I’m heading out today to take some photos 😀

I love your house, I can picture it when it’s finished and your view alone is enough to cause the rest of us to be filled with envy. You must be going crazy waiting on the weather to clear up so everyone can get busy finishing it up. We received 8 inches of snow a few days ago and now tomorrow, we’re expecting 60 degree weather. It’s been a crazy couple of years in the weather department. We’re still trying to recover from the drought we had last year.

The storm we were expecting has built into a cyclone and is now sitting off the coast (there are actually two of them now, Tim and Sandra). The good thing about this is that Tim has sucked all the clouds out to sea so it’s quite sunny here – perfect for the roof guys 😀
The weather has been crazy lately, Donna, the fact that you’ve had so much snow and then sudden warmth is quite strange – it’s like spring is trying very hard to get to you!

I love that veranda – it’s actually so big that I’ve organised for part of the back of the house to be converted back to a smaller veranda that I’m calling my ‘writer’s nook’ only because I don’t think I’d be able to concentrate on my writing if I sit on the front veranda and just ogle at those views all day!
My laptop died yesterday, so I was offline – but I’m heading out today to get some pics of the roof and hopefully I’ll have a new computer next week so I can post them 😯

Catching up on a lot of unread posts due to work etc so read this at the end of a series including all the ATO stuff (the sort of thing I had in mind when I first created ‘grumpytyke’, though it’s not worked out quite that way). Anyway, just to say it was so good to see something good for you; hope the roofing has all gone well.

The roofers didn’t turn up to finish it off yesterday – but I’ve been promised they will today. I’m heading out there shortly to check and take some pictures.

It’s is a beautiful room with a view! There’s something about the place that is warm and inviting. I keep ‘discovering’ things like yesterday when I noticed the type of glass that is in the windows. I took a pic and am going to post it soon 😀

Wow, that is looking marvellous! The weather is cold (-5 Celsius) where I am, but I won’t complain since I don’t have to worry about any tropical storms. Besides, i am winging my way to Germany this week. Good luck with the rest of the work!

WOW it’s looking fantastic. Love that first pic especially of the big room with high ceilings, what a wonderful space. And I just knew that hat link would be to the towel head. Love it! Weather down here is cool, so much cooler than last week, and a bit drizzly and grey. Nice to have the relief but it’s all good – no cyclones, that’s for sure. Can’t wait for new pics.

The view is magnificent, Eliz 😀 I can’t wait until they start cutting the cane so I can get all the white birds following the harvester. That’s a fairly spectacular sight 😉
