A freebie and gecko love
The big rains left us about a week ago and headed south where they caused an enormous amount of chaos and destruction. But now that the weather has cleared, I’m focusing on cracking the whip getting the The RUC moved out to the farm. Estimated time of touchdown now looks like the second week of February (please – don’t hold your breath).
In the meantime I’ve been dabbling with my three WIPs, swimming (a lot), and taking random photos.
I think you’ll like these two below.
A nice silky-oak dresser I got for free because the mirror and the hooks holding it in place are damaged. I’m sure it won’t take much for me to get it looking like new again!
I was enjoying a nice glass of wine the other night when I heard a noise above my head. When I looked up I saw these two gecko’s getting up to a bit of hanky panky above me. I think they must be well versed in the Kama Sutra.

Oh – I should have explained, Maddie. I was sitting outside! The geckos don’t bite and are actually (normally) very shy creatures. I guess living in the tropics you get used to these things. It’s like living with nature! 😉

Oh, thanks! I pictured the dresser (which I love!) and you in the same room with frisky geckos overhead. Glad to know the geckos were outside. 🙂 We did have a bat in our house once. That was a fun time with a broom.

We once had a bird come into the house and it flew into my flying ducks on the wall and broke one (ironic!)

My wife bought a mirror last year because she liked the frame. The mirror itself needs to be replaced because it’s like one of those funny mirrors at Luna Park. A true vanity mirror. 🙂

I love the dresser and to have it up and looking like something won’t take much… the geckos and their antics gave me a good smile… we have a lot of them running around reducing the mosquito populations for us.. but I must admit, never have I seen or witnessed the Kama Sutra antics… it looks as though they could get mixed up with whose leg belongs to whom… I do love the photo though… maybe more regular photography of the gecko antics could end as another WIP title “the Kama Sutra as depicted by the Gecko”

LOL! I love it 😀 I’ve only ever seen the gecko hanky panky once before, Bulldog – and that was about 20 years ago. I had to take a pic of it this time because it’s such a rare sight. But if I ever catch them at it again…. 😉
I like the way they keep the mosquito population down. We’ve got Dengue Fever going around here at the moment (a little like your malaria) and mosquitoes are the last things I want hanging around!

We had that weather here last week and then it rolled down the coast and got worse the further south it went. It came from ex-tropical cyclone Oswald and he was a mean one! It only drifted out to sea a few days ago – it was crazy weather 😯

We’ve had plenty of rain, Annie. I’m just glad that storm didn’t hit Sydney! It would have done a lot of damage.

Glad you’re now rain free and have to say I love geckos and think they’re very cute, though yes in this situation I too would’ve given them some space. I’ve just woken from a dream where I became aware of my love for nature and my sadness at what we’ve done and continue to do to the land and the other life that lives on it. I wish all life could co-exist more harmoniously…

This is the beauty of living in the country, Harula. You come to appreciate that we’ve all got to live together in harmony. It really annoys me when people kill things (I remember once a few years back when someone saw a gecko at our house and said ‘kill it!’ I thought WTF!?? and never had them back again). We’re all sharing the same planet and everything has a right to be here. A post about your dream would be very interesting 😀

Oh wow, I need some geckos here to eat mosquitoes. They always put a damper on my summer nights. Although Burt’s Bees puts out a natural repellant that actually works!

They’re actually quite lovely little things, Zen. They’re very shy, so it’s rare to see them doing these antics! They also eat mosquitoes so they’re kind of mini heroes to me 😉

Gecko porn… what a freaky pic. The dresser is darling. I have one that is similar but a bit larger. When we moved, the mirror and mirror arms were taken off to protect them. I liked it that way so I left them off and now my framed photos.cover the places where the arms were.

Your dresser is wonderful!
Geckos…when I was in 8th grade I went to Hawaii with my parents. My bed was the pull-out sofa and when I crawled in the first night there was a little friend in there with me. My blood curdling screams surely woke the entire island! My parents thought an axe murderer had broken in, but alas it was one not-so-cute gecko – probably just as scared of me!

Glad to here the rains have left. Oddly enough we’re having lots of rain too– usually we’re getting several feet of snow this time of year.
The dresser reminds me of the antiques my Grandma had in her house. You made me think of her. She’s been gone over 40 years, but I still remember her quaint, old-fashioned home.
And the geckos–well, life goes on, doesn’t it? The most “wild” creature that ever was in my house was a mouse — and my cat, Vinnie, made short work of him–he played the mouse to death! 🙂

Love the dresser! We have Geckos here, too, but I’ve never seen them like that, although I do hear them calling to each other sometimes. They are all over the back porch around the light in the summer – easy meals! Had one jump out from under my pillow one day when I went to make the bed; I don’t know who was more scared, him or me!!

We get stink bugs as well, Jennifer. When we see one or two we turn off all the lights because we know the rest are about to invade – they absolutely reek! The geckos like to eat them (as well as those horrible mosquitoes) so they’re my little heroes 😀

Your posts always make me laugh. I love the dresser… think of me & don’t do it up too much… I love old stuff just the way it comes. When I saw the geckos I thought ‘what a lovely little gecko sculpture…’ well… When I was at our house on the coast, I was having a chat with the 2 Rainbow Lorrie regulars in the tree above my head, when he hopped onto the missus for a little lovin’ not minding me at all… maybe the saying about ‘the birds & the bees’ should be changed to the ‘birds and the geckos’ 🙂

I’ll take you advice, Ella and not do too much to the dresser. Just a bit of a sanding and polishing. It’s missing a handle, but I’ve got some very old brass handles that would look lovely on it. I need to get the right clips to hold the mirror back in place and that should just about do it 😀

This place is like a veritable nature reserve. I was on the phone to my sister last week and she asked what the noise was in the background. I wasn’t sure what she was talking about and she said, ‘do you keep birds?’ Keep birds? Like in cages! LOL – no, that’s just the noise of the birds that live around here. You get so used to the noise of all the creatures that you don’t notice it after a while!

Seeing those geckos made me want to travel again. When I first took a major trip outside of the UK, I found the ‘wildlife’ terrifying. It was Fiji and I was walking across the lawn to my bunkroom and the ground was moving and jumping. I realised that there was a carpet of frogs beneath me! But I’ve come a long way since then so that I look at those geckos and think, sigh, how I miss them scampering around the walls, nestling into corners. Thanks for taking me back x

I’m hoping I will once I’m settled into the new place. I’ve got a shed that is about the size of a football field, so I’ll have plenty of space to work on projects like this 🙂 I’m also going to start making lead-light and stained glass windows (so wish me luck with that one!) 😉

Strangely enough I was talking to a computer programmer the other night at the pub while I was waiting to order a drink. He said he works on several programs at once instead of just one and people think he’s ‘weird’. I had to laugh, because I’m the same with my WIPs. If I get bored or stuck with one, I’ll switch to another. It’s just how my brain works, I’ve never been able to work on one thing at a time (maybe I’m OCD or something) LOL 😀

Love that dresser, Dianne! Here in the states they are often called a chest of drawers. However, in our neck of the woods they are called “Chester-drawers.” I see ads on Craig’s List for them all the time! (It occurs to me that maybe you aren’t familiar with Craig’s List? It is an online site for selling, trading/bartering your goods.)
