Here today, gone the next
I haven’t done much computer work this week. I loaned my glasses to a friend who had broken theirs. They have a similar prescription to mine and can’t do their ‘day job’ without them. Hopefully their new glasses will be ready by Monday and I’ll be able to read with ease again.
I only have a slight prescription and can get by during the day without them, but when it comes to screen work it makes things a little blurry. If you have a black page on your blog with light letters I’ve got no hope of reading it (sorry!).
“Don’t you have an old pair you can wear?” I hear you ask.
Well – I would have if some drugged-out dude hadn’t stolen my handbag from my kitchen when I lived in the city.
Apart from looking after my ailing parents-in-law; getting back to my country muse; rebuilding the farmhouse, and wanting to write full-time – this is one of the reasons I left the city. My handbag was stolen twice from my house while I was at home. The first time I took the washing off the line and carried the full load through the back door. By the time I’d dumped them on the couch to fold someone had followed me in and taken my bag from the kitchen. The second time I’d just got home from a friends funeral. I took the dogs out the front to feed them, but they both barked and raced around to the back of the house. Someone must have been watching for a while and knew their feeding time because they managed to jump the fence, slip in through the window and grab my bag before the dogs (German Shepherd and Rottweiler) could rip them to pieces stop them. That’s a lot of work for five bucks! But my glasses were in my bag and the hassle of (not only reporting all cards missing and getting a new drivers licence) replacing them was an absolute pain.
This is a pretty long story to explain why I don’t have a spare set of glasses – but hey, you asked!

We are having spectacle issues down here too. My daughter needs them for everything, even reading in bed. So the arm snapped off, we have fixed with tape (very good look), tried & failed w superglue and I have been delaying taking to shop to find out because she doesn’t have second pair if they need to send them away to get fixed. SO, today we go to shop, it’s a real hassle and I’m annoyed. That is all.

Spec update because I know you are desperate to know: Lovely, obliging, smiley optometrist has ordered in the new part (a whole new arm, I think). Luckily it was in stock in this country (otherwise would have been weeks), and once it’s in, he can repair in shop on the spot either tomorrow or Wed. Such a relief. We will be ordering a second pair of glasses for her. Until then she is managing with the arm taped on/the arm just comes off and they are a funny pair of lorgnettes. We find this very funny.

It’s so true! There are some fantastic bloggers out there with that set-up and I struggle to read through their posts even WITH my glasses.

The view from the block is absolutely stunning, John. I can’t wait to stand in the new place and take some pics. We’re just waiting on the architect at the moment who needs to draw a picture of a square and send it to the engineer who will decide where to put the posts (seriously – how hard is it to draw a square!) I’m getting very impatient… 😉

That’s so scary that someone actually entered your home while you were there and stole your purse! My husband and I always say that when the kids are gone, we’ll sell the house and live in a different big city every year, because there are so many we’d love to savor. Now I’m not so sure I want that. 😉

We lived next to a lane and a lot of dodgy characters would walk up and down there. The dogs really had their work cut out for them. It’s a horrible feeling knowing someone’s been watching you and been in your house 😦 Yikes – I’m so glad to be out of there. I’m sure all big cities aren’t like this, but they can attract a ‘different’ kind of people. Drugs were a big problem near our house (even though it was the most expensive suburb in the city!) It gives you some idea of how desperate people become to run the gauntlet past two big dogs to steal five bucks!

When I worked at a place downtown, my wallet was stolen twice because the owner didn’t have a door that locked once we were inside. The funny thing was, the person took the money and turned in the wallet with all the cards and driver’s license still in the wallet. I was thankful that I got my wallet back, but at the time I really didn’t have extra cash. (Seems like the story of my life.) But what had me more disturbed was the fact that someone got into my desk without anyone else seeing him/her. I can’t imagine having that happen in my own home! That’s just creepy. Oh, by the way, after I threatened the boss with a resignation, he finally put an appropriate lock on the door!

No glasses lending in this house as my hubby is blind as a bat in one direction and I’m a ‘slight prescription’ (computers & reading) in completely the opposite direction. That said, my closeup vision seems to have vaporized in the last couple of years – either that or manufacturer’s are making the small print REALLY small. (I finally understand my mother holding her menus at arm’s length) I now always travel with a pair of dollar store magnifying glasses for those label reading emergencies. Those I have loaned out temporarily on numerous occasions to other victims of the ‘small label conspiracy’ (I believe aka aging.)
Your ‘house’ moved fast! What’s the crop behind it? Is that corn, or sugarcane? It looks very lush & healthy whatever it is!

The crop is sugarcane, Suzan 😉 There’s acres of it all around us all the way to the mountains. I love it because it waves in the breeze which is very relaxing!
I might grab myself a pair of those dollar store magnifying glasses today – what a great idea!
I’m sure they’re making labels smaller and the telephone book is becoming a nightmare! 😯

Dianne, it’s good to hear from you again. I was worried that you’d been plagued by the heatwave and fires. We’ve been getting a lot of news about that on my local outlets where we otherwise don’t get much news out of Oz.
Anyway, that was very kind of you to lend your glasses. I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 12, and my current pair is in too fragile a condition to consider lending. I’ve had to Krazy Glue them twice while waiting my my insurance benefits to come around again (glasses are only covered once every 2 years). Thankfully, I’m now eligible again, and foresee a sweet new designer pair in the near future. 🙂

News from Oz hasn’t been good lately and I’ve even had a few bloggers email to ask me if I’m okay – I’m so flattered that people have wondered where I’ve been! This is such a great community 😀 The fires have stayed away from us (so far) but we’re supposed to be getting the monsoonal trough come through tonight, so I hope we don’t get flooded! 😦

The farmhouse was too far gone after the last cyclone, Amy so we had to knock it down completely 😦 We’ve been given a beautiful old farmhouse that we’re going to put in it’s place. It’s an old Rugby Union club (so we’ve called it the RUC). It should be up in a few weeks and I’ll post some pics of it 😀

The cyclone was last year and we didn’t notice the damage until we started taking out the walls and looking in the roof. Luckily we told a friend who told a friend and next thing we were given a beautiful old homestead to move onto the block (it was set for demolition) so we snapped it up immediately. Hopefully it will be moved onto our block in the next week or so 😀

Oh Di you poor love – glasses hell don’t we need them! What bastards stealing your bag and twice at that…and yes it is the inconvenience of having to change details, cards etc that is the most painful part. 😦 The land is now barren waiting for the Pub to arrive 🙂 How long will the process take of setting it up do you think?

I’ve got my glasses back now (thank god!) so I’m back at the computer doing what I do best (nothing) LOL! 😀
Having to get all the cards changed and a new license and bag and purse and glasses cost me over a thousand bucks! Sheesh – little buggers don’t realise they get five bucks, but it costs me a motza.
The pub should arrive in the next few weeks. Just waiting on the Local Council and watching the weather (that damn monsoon trough is looking to delay things) 😯

That’s awful (and scary) that someone stole your things while you were at home. Fortunately, our home has never been robbed.
My wife bought two pairs of glasses last year and that nearly broke the bank. I chose a cheaper route via Zenni Optical (online). I also recently bought two pairs of spares for about $12 each from Zenni (they were having a sale). Although you can’t try them on, you can upload a photo to see what the glasses will look like. Not ideal, but as spares they’re eye savers. 🙂

Heehee … Rich and I took off on the motorcycle one day, and before we were out of town, I made him go back to the house because I forgot my sunglasses, and protective eyewear is a law for a passenger. When we got back to the house, he got off the bike, and he saw my glasses on my head.

I give my old glasses to my dad; he’s the type to never actually get his eyes checked, and we’ve been playing this game for over ten years. Fortunately he doesn’t care about the frames, and I’ve never needed a spare pair. I might be due for new glasses this year, which is good, because he keeps asking for my current ones. 🙂

Progress on the new home… theft of hand bags… lack of glasses… I hope things get better… I have so many spare sets lying around where ever I go and need them.. I only use them for reading and working on the computer but I do agree with the black back ground and white writing if they would only use a bigger font it would make it easier… hope my white on blue does not give you problems…

Strangely enough I always hide my handbag in the house now (even though I’ve moved and am living in a low crime neighborhood) – and when I go to lunch or dinner I have it sitting on my lap. I’m obsessed with it and I have to get out of that habit…

Well, you have a bigger heart than I do – even if someone could see out of my glasses, I’m not sure I’d give them up 🙂 And crazy purse story. That would make me so mad to have someone go into my house and steal it. It would make me want to set them up with a fake purse and an exploding dye pack that banks use…so when the guy opened the bag..poof! Face painted bright red.

Funny you say that, Janna. My hubby came home one day and asked why I had a new purse and why it was hanging on the outside of the back door. I told him it was an old one that I got from an op shop and I’d put dog poo in it. HAHA! Unfortunately, he suggested I dispose of it immediately (party pooper). Then there were the nails I attached to the back fence – hmm…I think they worked a few times… 😉

Pain in the ass is a very good way to put it, Britt. I don’t think these freaks realise what a hassle it is to replace everything! I’m glad I never leave a lot of money in my purse (probably because I don’t have it!) A new bag, a new purse, license, cards, photos of the kids, new glasses, and the list goes on. They stole only a few bucks each time, but it cost me hundreds to replace everything. If they’d just knocked at the door and asked me for the money I probably would have given it to them (and then punched them in the head!) LOL 😀

LOL! I gave up handbags many moons ago, and have not had any problems. I feel the utility of a backpack for everyday use discourages thievery. Maybe they would feel like they were robbing a naive college student. Little do they know…I’m an “adult” with valuables.

A buddy of mine once had 3 lawn mowers stolen while living in the city. Each time was when he walked away for only a moment. Amazing how bold some people can be.

They’re VERY bold. How can you walk (or climb) into someone’s house while they are there and just nick stuff? It’s ridiculous. Drugs have a lot to do with their state of mind and I’m thinking that the second time it happened the person must have been really wired because they ran the gauntlet through the dogs (and my German Shepherd isn’t what you’d call a friendly character).

Hmm, I got to this just fine through my email. But there have been a heck of a lot of glitches with the “new look” of WordPress, which isn’t an improvement to my eye. It also seems every change requires more clicks to get where I want to be—that’s true of other websites, too.
I’d freak out if someone came into my house like that while I was home. But bad things can happen anywhere, not just in towns and cities. A sad commentary on human behavior in general, I guess.

I’m sure it can happen anywhere, but it seemed to be more prevalent where I used to live. It’s all drug related and that’s pretty sad for our society. People’s behavior changes and they become desperate (and that’s never a good thing). There were always a lot of addicts hanging around the city and it’s an awful thing for people to live like that – but I don’t have the answer.
The changed in WP are confusing me. I don’t like the new FP page and haven’t really gone back to take a look at FP posts since they changed it (whereas I used to check it every day).

I’ve been having WP gremlins too! And thieving little gremlins screwed me over after watching my comings and goings, breaking in while I was out for 10 minutes and driving off in my car with pretty much everything they could fit it it from my house! That’s how we came to live in the countryside and I’ve never looked back. Can’t wait to see your new photos.

Sorry to hear that you had to go through the not-so-great part of the city life. It is also one of the reasons we left the city, being constantly scared that someone is going to mug or hijack you, wasn’t fun.

Mugging was a worry for me as well. I came close a few times because I would work back late – it’s not a nice feeling. I would change my attitude and walk home ‘angry’ because it was the only way I could face that area in the dark. I thought ‘if I appear angry’ no one will think I’m an easy target. It’s not a good way to live!
The RUC will be beautiful when it’s on the block. Loads of approvals are needed and the monsoon weather is threatening to delay us somewhat – but it WILL happen (I need to stay positive!) 😀

You aren’t the only one who’s getting tricked by WP gremlins. Not me per se, but I have clicked on a handful of links to find that the pages don’t exist. Hopefully they will be clearing up that bug soon.
How scary to have an intruder in your house while you’re there. Talk about balls. I think what scares me even more about that is how that one guy knew your routine. That gives me chills. Be safe!

I think it must have been a meth lab! It was a very wealthy suburb, but close to government services for addicts. All of the houses in the street had been robbed several times and there were often alarms going off around the place. It was a little scary… The dogs have both settled into the country life beautifully and no longer have to be constantly ‘on guard’! They have become Blogger4Peace dogs! 😀

I’m so glad I wasn’t harmed as well. These people are usually just after money but I wouldn’t really like to catch one in the act because they are so desperate.
I read outside on my laptop most of the time and this is probably why those black pages are hard to read (even with my glasses)!
I’m impatiently waiting for the architect and engineer to sort things out with the house and once it’s up I’ll be taking a lot of pictures! 😀

We all rhave our favorite, or not so favorite, glasses story. Mine comes from a day when I was working on the dock by our sailboat. My wife was getting off the boat and swung her foot over the life line, only to bang her foot against my head with the result that my glasses flew into the lake. She drove us home that night. Luckily I was due for a new prescription!

Sounds a very scary thing – people in your house while you’re there…. And you’re now you see it, now you don’t is a bit scary too!!

I used to wear glasses when I was younger, but thankfully my eyes have healed completely. I do understand the pain of being without them though!
As for the bad stealing… yikes. All I can say is that I’m glad it was only the bag and they didn’t hurt you in the process. D=

Oh, you have had lots happening while I was out of range… since being back, in odd moments I have flipped through older posts for a bit of a catch up… I’m sad about your old house but the RUC looks exciting. You are so kind to lend your glasses… anyone who could wear mind is quite unfortunate as it would mean they are blind as a bat like me!

Hey Dianne, wow, sorry for the problems you’ve been encountering and then with this many commenters to answer also, Geez (although now that I think about it, neat to have this many comments), but how are you doing it? And I didn’t compute in helping the in-laws, work on the farm work on your book (way important) and probably stuff I don’t even know about too! So like I said Wow, oh and then the WordPress or something stealing or moving your posts about! … Well I just dropped by to say hi, was thinking about my favorite author (you) and wanted to check in. I’m waiting for my ‘new/old’ house to be moved – but it’s been raining for about a week and they can’t move it until everything clears up. So in the meantime I’m twiddling my thumbs and writing (not at the same time!) 😉

I’m hoping the RUC will be up by the end of next week. I can’t wait! I don’t think anyone will be able to get close enough to the farm to take any more of my bags (there isn’t a regular wave of junkies walking past the farm, like there was in the house in the city!) 😀

Wow, I’m so sorry about your purse getting stolen!!! That is a pain!! I don’t think I’ve had that happen, and not from my home! Long ago we were robbed of other things when we weren’t there including old jewelry that had belonged to my great-grandmother, and old tv, a vacuum, and a few other items. Worse would be my purse because my cell phone has everything in it! WP is always doing something weird with our posts, but I still love them. I think they have quit putting our gravitar up every time we answer a comment. That WAS annoying!! 🙂 Hope you are having a great week-end. 🙂
