Blood and Angels

Photo credit – Aivasovsky, ‘The Ninth Wave’ (public domain)

I’ve written about dreams before and how they can inspire stories (and even blog posts)! But I’ve had two dreams (I’m only going to post one here) that didn’t come to me when I was asleep – they came to me when I was on death’s door.

Warning – it you’re squeamish about blood, please don’t read any further.

When I was in my early twenties I suffered a miscarriage. I was almost 7 months pregnant and spent several days in the hospital. When it was all over I went home to recover. I remember my mother feeding me fish and beans because ‘that’s what makes you better’. But I didn’t get better. For about a week I was lethargic, depressed and in pain. At the end of that week I had a bad fever and found it hard to get out of bed. My hubby called the doctor who came over to see me. When he arrived I tried to sit up in bed and started haemorrhaging. The doctor told hubby to drive me to the hospital (I seriously don’t know why they didn’t just call an ambulance!) So hubby packed me up in the car and we set out for the half hour drive to the hospital.

After about 5 minutes in the car I began to feel quite happy – in a contented and very peaceful way. The car seemed to slow down (even though hubby assured me later he was running red lights and breaking the speed limit). I actually thought the clock on the dashboard was broken because it stopped ticking over. Everything began to move in slow-motion. The trees and the white lines on the road were crawling by. My entire body began to tingle. I could hear hubby in the distance yelling over and over again, ‘Are you okay?’

Next thing I knew I was above the car watching it drive down the road. I could see myself with my eyes closed in the front seat and hubby still yelling. I turned away and found myself standing at the back of a little beach house looking out over the ocean. I’d never seen this house before, but it seemed really familiar. Out to sea there was a massive tidal wave heading into shore, but instead of white foam it had red foam. A man was standing close to me and as soon as I saw him I said, ‘I’ve missed you so much!’ (I was nearly crying because I missed this guy so much and to this day I have no idea who he was! But I knew I loved him). I told him the tidal wave was coming and he hugged me and said, ‘I’ll protect you from the blood.’ I looked up again and saw that the foam on the top of the wave was actually blood.

I felt a jab in my arm and opened my eyes to find I was in the emergency room with a doctor standing over me giving orders to a nurse. Another doctor appeared from the end of the bed and said, ‘There’s another one.’ I didn’t know what this meant until the next day when they told me I had actually been pregnant with twins and they didn’t know this when I miscarried. Naturally, the other didn’t survive and I had been internally haemorrhaging for a week.

The doctor told me I needed a blood transfusion. I was okay with this (probably because I was so out of it). But the hospital’s blood supplies had run dry and they were sending out the call to another hospital to get more. Three hours later I was told that there had been an accident and the other hospital couldn’t spare the blood.

My recovery was remarkable (considering I had lost so much blood and not been transfused). Within 3 months I felt as good as new and within 18 months I had given birth to a beautiful baby boy (Nicholas John).

The following year I was sitting in the kitchen reading the paper when I saw a notice regarding the hospital. They were contacting everyone who had received blood for the past four years. Apparently, there was a new virus known as HIV and they now knew some of the blood in our local hospitals had been tainted.

I often wonder what would have happened to me and where I would be now if I had the transfusion. How different would my life have been? My heart still goes out to all those who were not as lucky as I was and I often wonder what has happened to them.

I still don’t know if the man in my dream was my guardian angel, or if it was all just a strange coincidence.

Have you ever had a strange coincidence or amazing experience you would like to share?

That is one gripping post. And it must have been a harrowing experience.

I have had a few close calls with car accidents that could have ended a lot worse. In one of these, I lost about a pint of blood mostly from my head through my ear. I was in the hospital for about a week and when I got out, I was sleeping for eighteen, twenty hours a day. I had the most incredible dreams. One of these dreams I remember quite vividly.

I was in a poorly lit workshop, waiting.for a guy. It seemed like I waited a long time. The man finally arrived, and he was a working man – blue jeans, checkered shirt – that sort of fellow. He looked at me and pulled a notebook out of his shirt pocket and flipped it open.

“There you are.” he said, indicating the book with a small pencil. “But you’re early. We’re not expecting you for awhile yet.”

So I left. I had to walk home. My hometown has a lake in the centre. My families house then was nowhere near the lake. But for whatever reason, I went to the lake. I jumped in and started swimming. I swam and I swam. I swam to the end, climbed out of the water, and proceeded to the last house with a yard that backs onto the lake.

This dream was eleven years ago. My parents moved into that house on the lake seven years ago. They were shocked when I told them about it after they were settled.

Thanks for a stirring post. And a forum to share my experience.

    Cheers.

But this wasn’t your time to go… You still had books to write and a son to raise 🙂

It was such a strange thing to happen. Whether I dreamed about the blood because I’d lost so much, or if I was taken somewhere and shown something, I’ll never know (but I kind of live in hope that it was the latter) 😀

That started my morning with a few tears. I’m a very spiritual person and have no doubt it was your guardian angel. They come to you at the times when you need them the most, as well as put that little voice in your ear when you need it. I’m glad he was there to catch you and send you back to where you belong. The world would be a different place without you.

(now if I could only find more hours in the day to finish The Everything Theory – it’s captivating!!)

Dianne, your post really touched me; thank you so much for sharing it. I’m thankful you recovered fully. I think God has designated you a very special angel for you as he continues to show up in your dreams.

I have had several dreams that have stuck with me in vivid detail.
This is one continues to haunt me at times:

One of my abusers flew his plane to the town I live in now, and purposely crashed it into my children’s school. I could see the entire thing play out from my house and saw the school burst into flames. Of course I was very distraught wondering if my kids survived. This was just a few days before 9/11.

Firstly, sorry to hear about the miscarriage. It must have been tough and extremely emotional. And your out of body experience—chilling! I remember my wife telling me about this new virus (HIV) even before it reached the media. Her cousin who worked in a hospital at the time had mentioned it to her. Not long after, our son was born and my wife had a difficult labour losing a lot of blood. The doctor wanted her to have a blood transfusion, but we asked him for an alternate treatment. It was a scary time back then.

I’ve experienced a few spooky events, but I’ll only mention one. I had a dream one night about an old woman. I can’t remember all the details now as it was so long ago, but I do remember it as one of those involved dreams. Anyway, I woke up from it and looked at the clock, noting the time. The next day at work, I mentioned my dream to a co-worker, giving her details about the old woman and the time I had woken up. She suddenly put her hand over her mouth in shock because her neighbour, an old woman, had died at exactly the same time.

That was a scary time for everyone. I’m so glad your wife knew and declined the treatment. How horrfying would it be to have you life saved like that only to find you had been infected. I often think the my child Nicholas and wonder what would have happened to his life had he been born to a mother with HIV. I shudder to think about it!
I think the dream about the old woman is fabulous. I wonder if she dropped in to say goodbye to you for some reason 🙂

I’m at a loss for what to say, other than what an altering experience, and I am so glad you were all right, with a healthy son not long afterwards. What might have been sits on both sides of this, but in the middle of it you were cared for beautifully. What a blessing!

Months after my brother died, I dreamed that I was in Manchester’s city centre, when a recently deceased British politician came up to me with a stack of cassette tapes. He said they were from my brother, and he hurriedly pressed them, over a dozen, into my hands. Along the sides of the tapes, where the band or album would be written, were ‘I’m okay, I’m at peace’, in my brother’s handwriting. He was a drug addict who took his life, so those words, whether borne of a message or only my own wishful thinking, were very comforting, also humourous, delivered by a crusty Scottish Labour government official.

This is a stunning, amazing post.

I’ve thought about this a lot recently because my hubby has been sick and he’s had multiple blood transfusions this year (he’s getting better now). But every time he was in hospital and the doctors would say they were giving him another transfusion, my blood would run cold! But so far – so good and these transfusions have saved his life (fingers crossed there’s not something else out there we don’t know about yet)

Nothing was said about the children I’d lost when I was with him, I just wanted to stay with him forever! It’s not the first time I’ve dreamed about him and he seems to turn up during traumatic times (which is a good and bad thing!) 😀

I have heard such stories when the mind leaves the body under certain circumstances (sort of near-death experience) and I a glad that everything went well for you. I am sure it gives you a different outlook on life – sort of make the most of every moment and intensively. Such expeirneces are there perhaps for us to realise what we have. I must admit that I am a complete atheist, so nothing in this way would have a connection to religion, I think more a physical connection with the function of the human body, but I am not here to have a theological discussion.

And me, well yes I had a very strange sort of experience. Some years ago I had an internal abscess in a sensitive place. I had a short operation, about 30 minutes and the surgeon removed it. I was lucky that I could have one of those operations where I was awake, so could follow everything. About 5 years later another growth was discovered in my back and the operation took 3 hours to remove it from my back. It was a teratom, meaning a collection of embryonic cells, mostly skin cells (by this time I felt like something from a Stephen King book). Actually it was an undeveloped twin (sorry no eyes, bones or hair). Anyhow, it started growing again and a couple of years later, after a 7 hour operation they got everything out plus my appendix and womb – no problem I was 50 years old at the time. Now everything seems to be ok after many years, but it certainly was a strange thing to happen

A teratom is usually a benign growth to be found on the Fallopian tubes, and is a sort of a collection of embryonic cells. Might have become a Siamese twin or just a twin, but does not develop, However, it can start growing again, as in my case. It sort of develop a life of its own and twined around my tail bone to such an extent that part of it had to be removed, just the last little bit It also grew into my intestine, but luckily the surgeon could remove it. I did actually write a story based on this experience some time ago. The Operation

I’ve never had a near-death experience like that, although my mother-in-law did when she was in labor with my husband. She remembered leaving her body and watching from above, feeling very cold. When she came to from the anesthesia, the doctors told her they had nearly lost her during the delivery.

I know experiences like this haven’t been scientifically validated, but they do make me think there really is something beyond this life that we don’t yet understand. And, of course, maybe can’t fully understand until it’s time.

There were many people that were infected with the virus and at the time, they were still figuring out how it was transmitted.

Thank you, Janna. That’s very kind of you. I think Nicholas well and truly filled the gap of loss. He’s gorgeous and is a now a fireman (which he wanted to be from the moment he could talk!) I’m sure this all happened for a reason – what that reason is, is anyone’s guess 😀

The transmission of the virus was a wicked thing – I really feel for everyone who contracted it 😦

You really were saved on many levels by your Guardian Angel. Not having the blood for the transfusion saved you from the slow agonizing deterioration by the HIV virus, Then having a healthy son with no taint from HIV was very special

Dianne, this post gave me chills as I read it. What an incredible story. I don’t generally consider myself to be a believer of the Hereafter and non-coincidences, but tales like these do tend to make me stop and wonder.

I’ve never had a near-death experience or anything quite like that myself. I’ve had a couple of altered states of consciousness (one brought on my extreme dehydration and the other, I can’t quite recall, though it was nothing illicit) in which I’ve had the sense that animals were speaking to me (both times involved snakes, which is part of the reason I like them so much). I’ve also had experiences with sleepwalking in the past, and still suffer from sleep paralysis from time to time (very unpleasant, btw). But I’ve never left my body, and find myself curious about what that would feel like.

This is so interesting, Janna. I’ve also suffered ‘sleep paralysis’ and it’s a horrible experience. Luckily it’s only happened to me twice in my life! 🙂

The altered states of consciousness are also very interesting and I’m thinking this is probably what I had, due to blood loss (as opposed to an NDE). I like the fact that snakes spoke to you (this is actually very cool!) because many native people believe they communicate with animals in ‘altered states’ and I believe them 🙂

Thank you so much for sharing this with me – I always love your comments 😀

I love commenting on your blog. 🙂 Your posts are so fascinating – there’s always a little something for everyone, both writers and readers. Plus, you’ve led a pretty interesting life to date.

Incidentally, I seem to recall having read somewhere that sleep paralysis is more common among creative people. Don’t quote me on that, and I still don’t like it (it happens to me fairly often, although strangely, only when I nap/sleep during the day; never at night that I’m aware of). But if it’s true, it’s somewhat of a consolation.

I’m quite intrigued that your dreams inspire your writing, and think it’s wonderful. I love dreams. Mine or anyone’s. Thank you so much for sharing this. Fascinating, heartbreaking, terrifying, beautiful heartwarming story… you obviously knew and had a great affection for the person you met. I love that you were given such a clear message. We have many beings watching over us. Interesting that this man “turns up” over and over. Like you & many other commenters, I had an out of body experience when I died on the operating table. I never had to be convinced of a spiritual existence but I find it comforting to have my own first hand experience. And, you have still another death’s door dream also… 🙂

I do have another one, but I’m not sure how to write it so it makes any sense. Maybe next year 😉

It’s amazing that you ‘died’ on the operating table – that must have been an incredible experience!

Maybe you could share that with us on you blog one day? *hint* *hint*

Thank you so much for coming over today, my friend. Have a wonderful weekend 😀

I have just finished reading ‘A Jersey Midsummer Tale’ and Have to tell you that I absolutely loved it. You are very talented indeed 😀

WOW, what an amazing yet sad story!! Thank you for having the courage to share with us. I whole-heartedly believe in guardian angels. I’ve heard mine speak to me (twice) and once he touched me on the shoulder and took away all worry and anxiety in my body instantly, but I’ve never seen him. Your guardian angel did indeed protect you from the blood. Amazing!!!

Congrats on the birth of your son and making a miraculous recovery!! xo
