Total eclipse of the brain

I was caught out today. Someone asked me a personal writing question I couldn’t answer (and that’s big for me!)

Of all the characters in your books, which is your favourite?

Good Grief! Now I have to go through them quickly in my head.

…Erm – I’ll get back to you on that…

So now I’m thinking out loud.

The girl with no voice and no name – who is picked up on a street corner by her old school principle who thinks she’s a prostitute, so she murders him (naturally!) Corrugated Dreaming (Manslaughter and Other Tears).

Maggie Smithers – who cooks up a very interesting dish for the townsfolk who have treated her so badly. (The Butcher of Mena Creek – Manslaughter and Other Tears).

Nicodemus Landau – a religious cult survivor, now lone-wolf biker who rides with a verbose demon on his shoulders (Let Sleeping Gods Lie).

Madison Ingram – a free-spirited atheist/artist who finds herself the target of a religious cult (Let Sleeping Gods Lie).

Luke Canning – an amateur astronomer who maps the orbit of a new planet only to find himself in the midst of a global conspiracy (The Everything Theory).

Seymour – a sergeant chasing a detective badge who loves real-life crime television and playing chess with an invisible partner (The Everything Theory).

Robert McDougal – a Scottish scientist with a purple goatee, a penchant for whisky and highly outlandish stories (The Everything Theory).

Seira Kanahele – a professor of anthropological linguistics who enjoys a good trek through the jungle with an ultimate goal to find the seventh book of the Nine Unknown Men (The Everything Theory).

Aurora Soul – trapped in a wheelchair and the unknowing star of her father’s bogus ghost-hunting television show, ‘Soul Search’ (Soul’s Child).

Clive Soul – steals his daughter’s dreams to reach fame and fortune only to find he’s attracted the attention of a very nasty demon (Soul’s Child).

Esther Crooke – obsessed with her weight, her books, Janis Joplin, and the body buried in her garden (Wolf Pear).

JD Cusack – a psychic detective who sniffs and touches his way into Esther’s garden (Wolf Pear).

Arista McGregor – a questioning, dog-fearing, teenager who is followed by a Rottweiler that may, or may not be a dog (The Eleventh Question).

Cayo – a sensitive-new-age witch’s apprentice who can absorb then verbalise human emotion (The Eleventh Question).

This is all I can think of tonight and I’m pretty sure I’ve left out a few of them. No doubt they’ll come to me at 3am!

If you’re a writer – is it just as hard for you to choose your favourite character (or am I just a bit of a character freak)?

If you’re an artist – is it just as hard to choose your favourite piece of work?

I’ll be tossing and turning all night now 😦

Hmm. So far I have a clear idea of my favourite character and story… though that is subject to change after I start working on my next project!

It does change 🙂 Every time I create a new character, I love them as much as the last one!

Not being a writer, I can only relate as a reader who has a terrible time trying to choose my favorite book. I have a shelf on the bookcase that only favorite authors go on, but trying to pick one book off of that shelf… I don’t know that I could do it. I can only imagine how much more difficult it must be to choose from things that you created yourself.
However, I am fascinated by your character descriptions and must know more! LOL!

Thanks mamagirl! I’ve already had tweets complaining that I forgot to include some characters! Oops.

As you could imagine, it’s really hard to explain a character in a few words (imagine trying to explain why you like a novel in a few words!) – I could have written ten pages but didn’t want to bore people to death!

Glad you’re looking forward to the Olympics (watching the opening ceremony as we speak!!)

Yes I have a favourite. My favourite is Mrs. Manipulator in my book ‘Murder in the School’. I like her because she uses everybody else to her own advantage and gets away with it. The way you describe your characters makes them sound very interesting. I am looking forward to meeting them soon.

Ooo – Mrs. Manipulator sounds intriguing! Is ‘Murder in the School’ on Amazon? I’d like to find a copy if I can 🙂

Hope you’re enjoying the Opening Ceremony!

Oh yes, the ceremony was fantastic, wasn’t it! I am still ‘up there’ with it all this morning!
My book is available in the Amazon.com Kindle Store under my pseudonym, which is Amanda Marigold. I am currently working on the sequel.

My favorite character in my book is an 88-year-old curmudgeon. I adore her.

I can’t answer “what is your favorite movie/song/book”, any of that because it all changes depending on my mood. I even have a hard time playing the game desert island, because really, 5 books/movies/friends? *sigh* – yet there are so many people out there who have favorites and whip them out of their *ahem* whenever asked. Good luck! Like with books, I would have to simply pick an interesting character and say, well right now, my favorite is this because she/he blah blah blah. That way I would be able to change my mind in the future. 🙂

I’ll have to remember that! Maybe I took the question too seriously 🙂
Great advice – today my favourite character is Cayo (only because I’m reading about him). Tomorrow that may change 🙂

    You’ve got a lot of great character names. I’m a little jealous now :;

Hahaha – that good? One thing I love to do is name characters. I have notepads full of names (you could say it’s an obsession).

Thank you so much for the compliment 🙂 🙂

Yeah, I love the process of naming and all of yours seemed so evocative. I honestly only read the first few descriptions and then the names took me by storm, they were so well tied together and yet individual at the same time. (I know…different books) but still I really got a good taste of your name preferences by seeing it in list format. It was cool.

Thank you! I used to love funny names as a kid, like Bob Down and Justin Case – sometimes I still use these kind of names in novels and (unless you really look for them) they’re hard to pick up! Just my little joke – I crack myself up sometimes:)

In my case my favorite character depends on what book I’m currently working on. They each have a special place in my heart, and I couldn’t pick one over another.

    Hi Dianne,

I have found it fairly easy to think of my favourite character, but as I wrote in my blog post today, she is the first character I wrote and she was based upon myself, so I felt a “connection” to her.

But I can definitely understand how it would be difficult to pick otherwise!

Ah – just read it. The character Rachael! I can’t believe your friend said his dog ate the story! I’ll go back and leave a comment on your post later – gotta go to work 😦

So glad you’re getting back into your story. Best of luck 🙂

I know what a stupid excuse! I told him I’d much rather the real reason but he said that was the real reason!
Thank you, best of luck to you as well 🙂
