Handy writing tip – fiction

Take on the persona of one of your characters. Have a friend ask questions as if you’ve just met and they want to know everything there is to know about you. Don’t hold back on the questioning and you’ll be amazed how much ‘flesh’ this will add to your character.

I’ll have to keep it in mind. It does sound like an interesting exercise.

Thanks Joe – I’ve met a lot of authors and its interesting how many of them get shy when I ask them about their characters. It seems they can write about them but they don’t really know them. This can actually show in a story because if the writer isn’t familiar with the character, it makes it difficult for the reader to visualise them and take interest in their journey. Regardless of how nice or horrible the character is, the reader still needs to associate with them in some way. This is why it’s hard for writers who really know their characters to kill them off!
